I would imagine that starting any website with no backing or support base is very difficult. It is actually almost impossible to break even without significant traffic, and it is basically impossible to achieve decent levels of traffic in a short time, which costs money...which takes time...
MyGaming essentially follows the same functioning model as MyBroadband, we provide content and a forum in which to discuss it. Its really quite simple, but we find people like it.
The most important objectives for us right now are to grow the community, upgrade and neaten things up and improve on the quality and amount of copy. In time, I believe MyGaming will grow to become something very special.
We are constantly upgrading the site (updated the forum software last night), and are due for an interface overhaul fairly soon. We just moved servers which has created a few bugs :/ so those need to be ironed out.
Our saw our first significant page rank increase yesterday, which affects how Google indexes the site. In time Google becomes the bread and butter of a website, and its looking good so far with our Google traffic constantly on the rise.
So, to answer the OPs question, yes, it is difficult.
We had to do it though, as we saw a space to create something that we thought SA was lacking. There are a number of established, and very cool gaming sites in SA such as Lazygamer and El33tonline which we have a lot of respect for, but we had our own vision and goals for what we wanted from a gaming site, and eventually MyGaming will encompass that vision.
