Good article, I pretty much agree with it all, the whole "hardcore gamer" thing is so stupid, as if there is some magical hierarchy.

Didn't particularly enjoy Halo to be honest, but Peggle! Now theres a game :P

I wouldn't really think of it as being a hierarchy. I think it just describes a certain kind of gamer who takes gaming in his or her life quite seriously, for whatever reason that may be. We're those people who are somewhat sad to see JRPGs diminishing while the rest of the gaming world continues to show lack of innovation and originality. Some don't give a shit, and that's fine, but some do and will express their opinions about it.

But that's all they are: opinions.

No I agree, but some people get stupidly passionate about "casual" gamers and games destroying the industry. I don't care, if it's good its good, whether it be a "serious" RPG or Plants vs Zombies.

    3. I have played Halo 3 as well as Halo 2 on the PC. With a game like Half Life 2 in mind, I couldn't find what was truly special about both of them.
    1. Why on earth would you play Resident Evil 4 standing? o_O
    2. Actually, I've played one of those Harry Potter games (on Wii, no less), and it was a solid, entertaining game. Just because it looks casual doesn't mean it's shit.
    3. But Halo isn't trying to be Half-Life 2. Halo is mostly about the multiplayer, and the multiplayer is loads of fun.

I just can't work out why you'd waste your time "blasting" this stuff. So you're not into it. K. Play something else. I just don't understand this mindset that says, "If you don't like it, rage." Gamers spend far too much time hating on things they don't like instead of playing things they do like.

Not all serious gamers care about JRPGs. :P

Surprisingly, my opinions are informed. I've played it as well (The Half Blood Prince for PS3). I didn't like. In my opinion, it had very little depth and value (compared to, say, the old Jak and Daxter games). Just so happened that, like many other games of it kind which I also think aren't very good, it targeted more of a 'light-hearted' audience. Therefore I established a link between being casual and being shit.

I never said Halo was trying to be like Half Life 2, I just said that that it doesn't quite match up to it. I was not talking about multiplayer in the first place. I was talking about the single-player experience.

It's not "blasting" in the literal sense, Azimuth, it's expressing an opinion, just how you are expressing your opinion against mine. I don't spend a lot of time 'hating,' (more of my time is spend gaming), but when I am asked to discuss a particular topic on a forum and my feelings tend to a certain direction I will express them. The beauty of forums is to share different viewpoints. I'm not running around saying things like "Xbox is FoR StUpId PeOpLe" because I do not own one myself, but if I have had a bad experience with a game I will have a certain opinion of it and have a right to express it when asked. Just how you have the right to "rage" about and insult Counter Strike gamers to your heart's content in a national magazine.

Not all serious gamers care about JRPGs. :P
That is called an example. Most gamers who play JRPGs are also 'hardcore' gamers.

I'm not sure where your "mindset" to "rage" at all my opinions is coming from. This is a discussion forum. If you want to patronize people, I'm sure you'll find somewhere else on the internet to do so.

And you're absolutely entitled to not liking it. But that doesn't make it objectively shit. Do you see what I'm saying here? Different people have different expectations of games. It's not that your or theirs are any better, but rather that they're, you know, different. And that's okay.

No, you didn't. But it's like comparing, say, Starcraft and Team Fortress 2. They're entirely different; it's simply not a very good comparison at all.

Perhaps I misunderstood what you meant by "blasting". My response wasn't directed at you specifically, mind you, but rather that hater demographic that seems so determined to shit on everything that doesn't cater specifically to them. I'm all for constructive debate and discussion, however, and I'd like to think that's what's going on here. I apologise if I seem condescending; it's not my intention.

See above. I'm simply pointing out that some "serious gamers" - myself included - loathe JRPGs. I've no issue with people who like them, but rather the implication that being a "serious gamer" (for whatever that's worth) means being into JRPGs.

My issues with the casual market don't revolve around games like peggle, I don't even care about them. But the games that have potential for greatness but get dumbed down for people who should go play something else, like in traffic.
    Games on this list include:
    Spore.
    Need For Speed.
    Medal of Honor: Airborne.
    C&C Generals and onward.
    Dead Space.
    CoD: MW2.
    Battlefield.
    Crysis.
    See the pattern? EAids!
Also note: great sales =/= great games.

Halo: I quite liked the 1st one on the pc. What I don't like about is the fact that other FPS franchises, that used to be very sophisticated are trying to copy Halo's playing style, at least when it comes to the PC versions. (MW2 is the culprit here.)

The economy: Refer back to the 1st point for the culprit.

Motion controlers: Well just like peggle, I don't give a phyling phuck. If I want to dance around like a twit waving a penis joke in my hands, I'll go to a nightclub.

And the last point I agree fully. FPS games are great! The problem is that it's being saturated with utter crap.

The singularity is about to explode! Weapons are at maximum.

Exactly, and that is where my gripe about 'causal' gaming lies. However, it's not that there's anything particularly wrong with the games, it's the motivations behind the development that make one feel more like a consumer and less like a gamer.

Yeah. If those games were made to tier full potential, than I wouldn't care about the casual market. Everybody CAN actualy get what they want. True gamers can get great games, casuals can still get games, pubs/devs can still get lots and lots of cash. So why shaft the gamers?

The thing is that casuals are willing to accept anything and the developers ask "why bother?".
