First Gothic I played was G3 as well. At first I thought it was a buggy piece of crap. After all the patches though, I found that it was a buggy piece of crap, but a strangely fun buggy piece of crap. It grew on me the more I played it, but never finished it due to Getting DSL at the same time and then it was COD4 all the way.

Try Risen it is almost EXACTLY the same game-style, but much better polished than Gothic 3 ever was and I really enjoyed it (I am pretty fussy). Gothic 3 was somewhat a mess to be honest, 1 and 2 were much better by far.

Also like you mentioned mods and patches help Gothic 3 tremendously. There are some great usermade ones that up the textures and fix a ton of things.

Nox is my personal favourite. Finished it 6-7 times. RIP Westwood.
Nox was EPIC! Damn that game was good...I thought the "magic" atmosphere was translated so well through the level design and graphics. Pitty they never made a sequel
