    Default Mafia II Review (MyGaming)

    Mafia II

2K delivers a truly classy cinematic experience with Mafia II

Very very nice review! It's sad about the length of the game. Only 12 hours? It has the potential to be a lot longer than that don't you think?

I've decided to ignore reviews for games I'm excited to get. More often than not my experience with the game is nothing like the reviewer's experience.

    Hey Neo

Length may be an issue for some. I guess it depends on the gamer. It actually took me about 14.5 hours, but chatting to other journalists, it took some of them 9.5...

The problem is that you don't really get given much time to explore the city as the narrative keeps things moving constantly. But I liked that.

Then of course there is no multiplayer or anything.

I personally think that R375 (PC) is worth 10-15 hours of quality entertainment, but many will disagree. I must admit, if I was shelling out for the console version I would be a little less enthusiastic.

But dude, you HAVE to get it, even if just to see it running on that monster res screen of yours!

Can you not explore the city during missions?

The original Mafia had Freeride which greatly increased longevity.

Not sure about 6 for originality.

Besides the original Mafia and GTA there are no other games anything like it. Story, setting, gameplay.....

Nice review, the game looks great. Pity about the length though, I would have hoped that they would at least give you side missions to do, seeing as how it is an open world. Running around exploring the world can get tiresome fairly quickly imo.

There is a degree of exploration, but for the most part, the narrative keeps things moving quite quickly.

I responded to your comment about the originality factor on the front page.

It gets a 6 because although everything is done very well, there is little new to speak of.

The basic third-person combat/cover mechanic is heavily used, and games featuring massive sprawling cities are now quite common.

The story and setting will feel familiar to anyone who has watched a Godfather movie, or any other similar franchises - Goodfellas, Scarface, Donnie Brasco.

Also, the entire concept of running around a big city, steeling cars, evading the cops etc has been done.

In fact, pretty much everything in Mafia II has been done before.

The 6 is meant to communicate this - don't expect to see anything you haven't seen before.

    Does that help?

I downloaded and installed the demo. I get about 30fps average on my setup at my native resolution. I thought it would be unplayable but it seems to run pretty well. Better than GTA IV at least! I want to finish the demo to get a better feel for this game and if I like it enough I get it. It just makes me realize how desperately I need to upgrade this dual core CPU of mine.
