Results of the ASUS 2010 MSSA S A National LAN Championships
The ASUS 2010 MSSA S A National LAN Championships were held at the Bozzoli Hall, University of Witwatersrand, on the 4th and 5th September, 2010.
The venue proved to be more than suitable, and as discovered on the day, would be an excellent venue for hosting future StarCraft II™ championships.
The network was provided courtesy of MAYHEM. As usual MAYHEM provided all the support that the MSSA could ask for – with a smile…
The Tournament was convened by MSSA President Colin Webster, presided over by Donald Mullany and senior Umpire Garth Schoeman and included the following periods; Call of Duty 4, Quake 3, Warcraft III, Guitar Hero 5, FIFA 2010, DoTA and Counter Strike V1.6. These periods were played over a single day, on their respective days, to a number of rounds dependant on the number of entries received for the periods.
Provincial and National Colours were awarded to the respective players whose results in the national eSports championships were merited by their performance in previous regional championships. National Team Selectors were also present to evaluate the behaviour of the prospective candidates anonymously during the course of the championships.
Day 1; 04 September, 2010.
This day held the Call of Duty 4 Team period, the Quake 3 and Warcraft III individual periods and the Guitar Hero 5 console periods.
Enthusiastic and cheerful teams entered COD 4. The competition was eagerly entered into and the teams fought valiantly for first place.
As most members are aware, the WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne championships were being used as a the National Team Trials to choose the team that will attend the 2010 IeSF Grand Finals in South Korea.
Gamers arrived for the championship from four provinces to battle for the honours.
The standard of play was undoubtably the highest seen in a South African LAN for many a year.
Nevertheless, Samuel ‘Valprax’ Scott still managed to cut a swathe through all the gamers to win all his games and to become undisputed South African National Champion.
Even in the Guitar Hero™ period, spectators noticed a much improved standard.
The gamers were privileged to be the first to use the new guitars. There was much ‘ooing’ and ‘aahing’ as the new guitars were produced and the gamers were blown away by the new looks and design of the guitar. The sleek new design was an immediate hit.
Newcomer Tiaan Venter demonstrated just how good he is and trounced all of his opponents.
Quake III continues to be a popular and competitive game. There is no doubt that many of the skills in Quake III are transferable to the other first-person-shooter team games.
As expected, competition was tough, and first place was only separated by use of a tie-break.

Day 2; 05 September 2010
FIFA2010 and Warcraft III DoTA were held.
DotA saw a disappointing turnout. However, the standard of play was intense between After Shock Effect and DuCore as the two teams battled it out for first place and National Colours. No quarter was given, and at the end of play, after a fierce, but very sportsmanlike competition, After Shock Effect emerged victorious.
Just like WarCraft III™, the FIFA™ championships were being used to select a team of two players to officially represent South Africa at the 2010 IeSF Grand Finals in South Korea.
The rivalry was intense as gamers fought for the highest honours in the country – to be chosen for an official team and to be awarded Protea Colours.
A hush fell over the competitors as they played for top honours. At times it was so quiet that you could have heard a pin drop – the concentration was so intense.
At the end of play, young Claudio de Aveiro emerged triumphant. A great camaraderie was immediately struck between Claudio and Abubakhar Ebrahim who finished in second place.

Colours
It is always satisfying to award national and provincial colours to deserving gamers. The colours are not awarded lightly and are awarded only when gamers meet the required criteria.
To earn National Colours, a gamer must win all of their games at a National Championships
To earn Provincial Colours, which are always awarded on residency, a gamer must:
1. Win all of their games at a Provincial Championships, and/or
2. Finish in the top 20% of gamers at both a Provincial and National LAN Championships.
It therefore gives me great pleasure to announce that the following gamers have earned their National Colours at the ASUS 2010 MSSA S A National LAN Championships:
Vernon Avis
Ben da Silva
