Question Xbox 360 - Resonating Disk Issue

    Hi Friends,

My copy of Forza 3 is making me a sad panda.

There are 2 disks in the game box. Disk one which is the play disk resonates terribly loud when I insert it into my xbox's dvd tray. The 2nd disk (along with every other Xbox game disk I own) runs perfectly smooth.

I've tried installing the game on my xbox in the hopes that it wouldn't require as much reading off the disk, but to no avail. The resonating buzz noise drowns out the game noise.

Has anyone experienced this or know how to remedy it? I can't take the game back since it belongs to my bro who bought it as a bundle copy.

The game runs (i.e. reads the contents), but aside from the terrible noise, I don't want to risk damaging my console.

The disk is brand new and has no scratches or smudges on it.

    Any help/advice/suggestions?

What model XBOX 360 do you have? It may be one of those older models that has an issue with noisy DVD drives in general. If that's the case, you can go on the net and try look for a guide to modify the DVD Drive to create less vibration and noise?

    Check this out maybe?

... If the game is installed to the HDD, why is the disc spinning? It shouldn't spin at all. Ever.

I didn't climb inside and ask it. Regardless of its reason, it's still making one helluva noise which none of my other disks are making. :/

That is interesting, as Azi said it shouldn't spin. I can't stand the noise the 360 makes when running off disc that's why I install all my games.

Only thing I can think of is that the disc is not flush and may not be spinning "straight" causing the hum. Just a thought.

I really hate to ask this, because it's so condescending, but are you sure the game is installed properly to the HDD? If you go to My Xbox, and hit Y on the game disc window, is there the option to "Play from hard drive"?

Is there no way that you can borrow a mates disc, see if it does the same thing?

Azi, I only installed disk 2 which said "content install disk", but busy installing the play disk now. It's making a marafaqa of a noise while installing and even did so in the xbox dashboard. However it seems when in game it quiets down a bit.

Hopefully the install works fine, as it battled to read the disk properly a few times now. I don't like this.

I had a similar thing happen some time ago on a DVD drive for my PC back when they just came out. A dvd was also resonating like this and ended up shattering inside the hard drive. Everything was fucked. :/

Interestingly, most of the resonating seems to be coming from below the power button near the base as opposed to the actual DVD shuttle.

So it's just a vibration issue. Tilting the xbox to lie horisontal has removed the problem entirely. I can't help but suspect my power supply fan of being the culprit. Even my PC box used to do the same thing on an old power supply.

I'd just love to know what frequency causes it to f*** out like this.

Right, thanks Spooner, Monkey and especially ThunderAxe. (and Neo if he's ninja enough to see this.)

Game is installed off Disk 1 and is running completely silent. Xbox is still in upright position as always.

    EDIT: censoring swearing
