Default New Device Could Play PS2 Games on PS3

All PlayStation 3 owners may finally be able to enjoy backward compatibility.

Sony Japan recently filed a patent for an external "new generation console to previous generation console" adapter, Siliconera reports. The schematic for the device shows it has its own processor, a DVD decoder/emulator, sound processor, and graphic processor.

As with all patents, nothing is guaranteed. Sony filed a patent last year for a new cell-based emulation engine that could play PlayStation 2 games via firmware update, but nothing has materialized from that so far.

Sony removed backwards compatibility from the PS3 back in 2007, and has repeatedly stated there are no plans to re-introduce the feature. The company seems to be set on re-releasing its greatest hits collection of PS2 titles on Blu-ray discs at retail.

I imagine it wont be cheap, but well worth getting. I have many fond memories of my little PS2, it still runs like a champ.

Tekken Tag on the PS2 was slow, possibly a problem with the PAL version. Weird issues you used to get with the PS2 when it came to NTSC and PAL due to the hertz. Oh also why remove a feature to only then add a tack on device later?

    Weird indeed.

I have never played on PS2. Only in the arcade. They probably adding PS2 support now because of PS3 Jailbreak?

Do you think that SONY would go to the trouble of designing a PS2 adaptor for the PS3 if they could replicate what the Jailbreak purportedly does with a firmware update?

I am wondering the same thing as Lupus. Perhaps more people wanted backwards compatibility than what SONY thought?

Um, and re-purchase all of my favourite PS2 games again so that the company can make more money out of all of this? No thanks.

That said, I've never been bugged by the backwards incompatibility issue as I just use my PS2. I guess that not introducing backwards compatibility was Sony's way of financially protecting itself for PS3's losses by making money off those who did not have PS2s at all. Well, obviously.
