ArcaniA: Gothic 4 DRM system revealed

Should be interesting to see how this goes with new developers for the series. I have this on preorder from steam.

I'm wondering the same thing and that's why I'll rather not pre-order it. I'm taking the wait and see approach on this one.

Even with the bugs I enjoyed the games. So I am willing to take a risk.

+1

My three-strike concern, currently, is that they have removed trainers (those who would teach you new skills after doing a little something-something for them), they've also made crafting mundane (you can craft in thin air; no need for alchemist bench, smithy, etc any longer) and well, Securom.

We'll see how it goes, I've watched a bunch of vids and it looks and seems awesome, very true to the Gothic series but I worry about how far they've gone in an attempt to appeal to the casual American market.

I intend to buy the special edition for now. If I find anything else out that I don't like then I'm going to have to come to terms with the fact that "my" Gothic is dead and that it will at least live on in Risen. Speaking of which, Risen 2 has been announced :D

Nice, now here's to hoping it's not as bad as Gothic 3. :/

Patch G3 with the latest community patch and have at it. It's actually not a bad game at all and is pretty enjoyable in its own right as long as you don't play it with the intention of trying to do too much too soon--you'll simply overwhelm yourself. Many players enter it with the assumption that the aim is to liberate Myrtana, Varant and Nordmar. That's just part of the game, but in no way the beginning or end to it. You could probably get through it without ever liberating anything more than Vengard and Gotha.

What about my back? :erm:

But yes, I thought I'd stop by after spotting the article :p I can't avoid an article or thread about my all-time favourite game series :D

Risen is Piranha Bytes' work, as were the first three in the Gothic series. They defined a world that gave them a cult-following of ridiculously loyal fans. Spellbound are the ones working on G4 and they seem to have mostly stayed true to the Gothic world and I think it holds a lot of promise.

My concern, as I said, is the lack of trainers and environmental interaction when crafting--these were things that added to the charm and gave you a sense of realism. They were a mechanic of making you feel rewarded for doing things for NPCs.

We'll see how it goes, so far I'm still somewhat optimistic.

For the record, Spellbound aren't the people who developed the travesty that was Forsaken Gods. JoWood and Spellbound are both doing their utmost to avoid any bugs (which is why it has been going on an, "It's ready when it's ready" schedule).

To me, Gothic will always be Piranha Bytes' baby and Spellbound need to bear in mind that the cult-following Gothic has is because of the renowned work and unique charm Piranha Bytes imbued in the series. Taking things from that to appeal to that casual market (a market that couldn't care less) risks ostracising their fanbase. I think they're betting a lot on G4 and we'll have to see how it goes.

I just hope that even though it might not be a Gothic 2, that it will at least be a positive learning curve for Spellbound.

Also, I sincerely hope that they haven't turned Gothic into a generic grab-quest-do-quest game... Gothic has always been full of imagination... Reducing it to that will just be... pitiful.

Only saw your post now.

I'm intent on buying the Special Edition from Take2. It will contain a cloth map, a novel (The Cleaved Maiden), a poster, stickers, art book and sound track.

Silly digital downloaders :p

I only do special editions for games I am really looking forward to. So basicly only bioware and witcher games. Everything else days I go with steam. Besides if there is a shipping as has happended a few times this year, I don't have to wait... :D

PS. For those who may want to get this and try gothic 3. If you preorder with steam you get gothic 3 for three and can play it straight away.
