But it's considered unskilled labour, so any Tom or his dog can apply - and anybody gets pushed into the butchery - the small butchers need to take people who will accept low paychecks or they can't compete with the big players (Shoprite et al) who don't give a crap either way.

    That's my theory anyways.

Woolies has never skipped on quality though ... but yes, the prices are frightening.
My grandfather was a butcher. A very good one must I say. He won an award.

I'm not mad about wild game meat. Prefer beef, lamb/mutton, pork etc. The usuals.

My point exactly. Just to clarify - when I say old days I'm not talking about 50+ years ago ... as recently as maybe 15 years ago - when most people would go to the local cafe for bread and milk, and the local butcher for meat. Your nearest mall was a drive away, and you had one Checkers/Pick n Pay per town.

Nowadays you open your door, throw a brick ... and it will likely bounce off 3 shopping malls before hitting the ground. Small operators barely stand a chance. Same with quality. All about quantity these days.

Hmm, I think I must be an adopted foreigner, as I hate Braai's O_O

Not much for teh stench of smelling like a Braai, nor much for the taste of braai'ed meat except for when im drunk Then a boerewors roll sure does taste good.
