The Sinotech looks like it could be an option, although I think it might be smarter in the long run to fork out for a bigger name brand.

At this point it's going to cost me R850 to repair my current TV, so now I'm teetering between fixing it and going LCD. Eish, but the price difference O_o

Tinman, where'd you get your set from?

At home we have a 32" Samsung LCD HD Ready 4 series and a 40" Samsung LCD Full HD 6 series. Don't really notice the quality difference between the two until you watch a Blu-ray. Size-wise, a 32" is great, but the 40" is awesome! We paid R8k for the 32" and R14k for the 40".

The Game TV specials don't look too shabby.

Nice thing about Sinotec is they're manufactured locally using various parts. I.e. the lcd panels are Samsung and they use various chipsets. It comes with a 5 year warranty as well, which IMHO isn't bad at all.

The thing that confuses people is that they think an LG or a SONY consists 100% of lg/sony parts, when in fact they use chipsets from all over. I.e. most tv's use philips audio IC's or Telefunken SMPS's etc. I know this since I've repaired about 300 tv's in my early days. Philips may not produce wonderful end products, but they are leading in producing medical grade components. So it makes you think.

Just about the only brand who keep to their own "branded" chips is Panasonic - and they make you pay for the "novelty".

So go for the panel that you find gives the best output...sit down and test it or bring in your gaming console to the shop to check it out.

I love it, no complaints whatsoever.

I previously owned a 42" LG which was stolen. To be honest I have not even noticed the size difference. If anything the Samsung's image looks a bit tighter as a result of the 2inch size difference.

A very good TV that I would highly recommend.
Probably about the best deal you are going to pick up. If you aren't on too much of a tight budget, go with Sony or Samsung. If they're too expensive... there are some other options.

Their contrast ratios are quite far off those of the more expensive models. You reckon it's not really an issue?

Slummies is nice in that they allow you to bring your console in to test the TV

I am also on the lookout, but really need to focus on what to get first, PC upgrades, laptop or a LCD... decisions, decisions.

They had very nice prices at the Digital Life Expo in Sandton this past weekend, from 27-29 March. I think there was a HD Sony 40" for R8999 or something... unfortunately I deleted the e-mail earlier.
