Fact is it made a HUGE impact on the genre, and pretty much all MMO's after it have tried to clone the experience in many ways and largely failed.

These days so many people play MMO's and games in general that we are not in the proverbial closet any more. But that within itself has had an interesting impact on the industry.
Having played a number of MMO's myself, I can comfortably say that WoW is not the best at any single feature ... but because it pretty good at including all/most of the features, by law of averages it comes out on top.

It doesn't have the best graphics
It doesn't have the best Auction/trade system
It doesn't have the best PvP
It doesn't have the best character skill configuration
It doesn't have the best looking armor/weaponry
It doesn't have the most expansive world
It doesn't have the best online community
It doesn't have the best profession/vocation system
    etc.

BUT it does have all of those things all in one game, where other MMO's would always beat it in A feature, they would completely lack another 3.

    I've played:

    Guild Wars (all of them)
    Lord of the Rings Online
    Runes of Magic
    Some or other weird thing
    Aion
    Age of Conan
    Warhammer Online

WoW always tends to draw me back, be it for nostalgic reasons or otherwise...

I have never been able to get into any MMO. Just not my scene. I'm too impatient. Not knocking the genre, just not my thing.

And Wyvern, unfortunately girls such as yourself are in the minority. I'm sure the are way more lady gamers than people realise, but they too scared to step out for fear of whatever.

For the record, my wife knew I was a geek and I never hid it in any way. I mean, she knows I've watched the Original Trilogy more times than I can remember and if that doesn't scream geek, then I dunno what does!

Hahahaha, See I used to be a girl who wouldnt admit to being a geek, strangely enough it was the gamer guys on forums, irc and irl ppl I met that made me realise being a gamer isnt weird, we just are different :P And that reminds me need to get FireFly and Serenity back from my brother, before he thinks its his!

I play rugby, cricket and action cricket. I also game no one has ever called me a geek. A geek about 12 years ago was meerly someone who owned a pc. Now a days all sports stars and the like have twitter, facebook and whatnot and have played on a xbox or something alike, so gaming is no longer a geek thing. WoW players though are massive epic fail dorks.

At the end of the day, everyone is different. F1 Drivers are different, scholars are different, businessmen are different..

Gaming is just a past-time that some people choose over watching TV, hugging trees, taking the ol' Hotrod for a spin, you know? People tend to associate certain activities with stereotypical characters and that makes people get an idea that gaming, for instance, is for weird geeks. Just be yourself, and if you like gaming, well that's awesome. We're sure not missing out on one of the most entertaining things out there

    Long live gaming, people!

You should follow Nathan Fillion on twitter. Very interesting guy.

Oh ... and back when we were on IRC it was still considered weird 'talking to people on the internet'.
