    Default Owning a firearm

I have recently been offered a Colt .45 pistol and a double barrel pump action shotgun, sawn off with pistol grip from my father in law as he is no longer residing in South Africa. I would like to inquire whether it is possible to own the weapons, but store them at a local gun club or similar, as I would prefer not to keep the weapons on my premises and use it for target shooting etc. Is there a provision for something like this in the law?

Yes, lots of people keep their guns off-site. Usually w/ guns shop, which have a gun safe anyway.

Demand for this type of storage far exceeds supply though. So it will prob be difficult to find & be expensive.

Getting your firearm license (1 firearm only) will prove to be very difficult and equally lengthy. Good luck though buddy. Maybe ducttape the sawn-off shotgun to the bottom of your bed.

Well I own 2 guns, a .45 mark 23 for self defence and a customised dragunov for a sports rifle, the licences weren't hard for me, but thats mainly because I had some inside help. I keep both in a 3 ton safe, well beyond the legal requirements and probably cheaper and more secure than any shop or range can offer.

    Ja, I've heard it's a mission getting a licence.

Well, I at least want to look at my options, but I'm not keen on keeping a firearm at home. I'm of the opinion it's an unnecessary risk and more often than not could escalate a situation that doesn't need to be. I'm not anti-gun, just don't want one in my house.

To get a gun permit isn't actualy that hard, theres just a very long waiting list. As I said, I had some inside help and got mine in 2 months instead the usual 9 to 12

EDIT: Ok I forgot to take into acount the background checks and that whole series of hassels, but if you don't have much of one, there shouldn't be any problems.

Oh! Theres is another option. Go join the SADF and you can have as big an arsenal as you like lying around the house, they won't care. As long as you don't tell anybody your actually Hannibal Lecter behind the big rubber nose and mustache.
