If you plan on playing LotRO, good luck with the patching! You're going to download a load of data patching that one up.

If you're looking for sci-fi you could always try Anarchy Online. It's free. The graphics at the moment are very dated, but a huge graphic overhaul is due later this year which will bring it up to date.

If you're looking for a sandbox sci-fi fantasy, then Ryzom is an excellent choice in my opinion.

The game has been out since 2001. Since then numerous expansions have been released. As a result you'll find that the starter areas won't have very many people and that people will be spread out a lot. The world is pretty huge. You'll notice that cities are mostly teeming with people. I've never had an issue with the population myself. Also, there's enough players to sustain two servers, so the population must be healthy. For a game that was released so long ago its surprising.

still AO is light years ahead of poor neocron. /sigh what a waste of 1.8 gig's of downloading.
