I'm not knocking LANs really. Just expressing my feeling towards the big ones. As a concept yeah it sounds cool, but, for me, practically it's not that great.

What I would be quite interested to find out is what is the average age of attendees? Maybe I'm just getting older, more picky and full of shit, I dunno. Obviously these big LANs work, otherwise no body would bother hosting them, but I'm curious about the ages involved.

Obviously we can't have like 25 people playing starcraft over the internet, but we then advise them to only play against each other so only the authentication requires internet and the games run p2p.

F*** yeah we gonna play older games as well.
SO no MW2 or Black Ops? Cause as far as I know, you need constant online authentication to play these Steam titles. Now I realise that all these new titles that all require internet in some form or another to even play just LAN is not your fault, but I do belive they are going to lead to diminished LANs in the near future. Old games are good & well, but people move on and want to play the new stuff and without internet connectivity in abundance at these LANs, well it's going to hurt them.

Personally to me I find LANS very exciting and enjoyable, but there are a few required ingredients :

1- Vibe : Incredibly important! The attendees must be having fun but you need to set rules to explain to the attendees on how to have fun. We at OC have started the idea that when you are having fun, randomly start clapping. The general rule is that if you hear other people clapping, clap with. Some of you might have noticed some claps when waiters drop crockery / food at restuarants. Its really rad if the whole restuarant claps... cause shit happens. Anyway, the whole venue clapping for like 5 seconds makes for good vibe.

It's all good that you want to have a good vibe, but there are some other things about big LANs that's a real comedown for me. First of all, no showers. So I was just lucky I know a few people in Bellville (obviously going to OC) and I could go to their house and have a shower in the morning.

Secondly, as everyone else says: People just sit there the whole night copying games and movies, that's it. Last 4 times I went to OC I hardly played any games. I was so keen on playing some CSS, but there were no more than 10 people playing at any given time, and if they did it lasted for about 30 minutes.

There may be some people that enjoy big LANs, but I'd much rather have a LAN with a braai, rolling a fatty and playing COD4 with 7 of my mates

I'm saying this as someone who used to be a regular OC attendee - for roughly 3 years I was at OC every single month - started going back in the days when they were struggling to squeeze 250-odd gamers into the hall at Theo Marais.

But I miss those days. I've got to congratulate Treath and the boys for what they've managed to accomplish with OC - as Treath says - the vibe is the big thing, but for me, it just isn't there anymore. It's gotten too big. And as much as they try and get games organised (and they do, I'll give them cred for that) - the general population at the LANs are just too focussed on getting the max amount of leeching in. Everybody plays, within limits, the same damn thing - you either see DoTA or CODMW being played - and 75% of the screens are running DC++. And now that I have ADSL, and I've switched to getting all my acquisitions through legal channels - that doesn't even draw me anymore. Okay ... this aspect might have changed a little - I haven't been since ... ummm ... February? I think - so maybe the guys are now all happily jolling together.

    I have my doubts though.

Gotta add - if they decide to organise another old-school LAN, I'll be there

Treath, do me a favour and ban Leeching in its' entirety from the next 4 or 5 LANs and tell me how many people still come. And rAge must sommer now already make policy stating that leeching will be banned completely and anyone caught trying to leech will be asked to leave and his or her details might or might not be given to whoever.

Would love to see what happens.

lol ? i'd venture it never happens as some of the organizers probably leeches as well and that it would cut down too much on profits as attendance will be less.

i remember at a point dc++ was banned at mayhem as it was causing too much lag. however i would love to see some lans man-up and do this over just worrying about the "vibe" and the "$$$".

This man has a point, I would also love to see what results from this.
