If you're worried about the drill slipping, just use a punch to make a notch for the bit to bite into 1st.

I did that, pine has some harder strips in it that divert the drill anyway.

I agree with czc, for precision drilling a hand drill is still by far the best to use, much easier to control the speed and direction.
