Final Fantasy XIII out today, price comparison

i was wondering if people are still excited about yet another Final Fantasy... i just started playing Star Ocean, and its so typically JRPG that it may have been named Final Fantasy. the last FF game i played was IX on the PS1 :) and i remembered it to be a lot better than it was when i played it on my PS3 the other day :P

I like a good JRPG. Problem is, it's not the most innovative of genre's, and since the days of FF7 breaking ground on PC, not much has changed. Mechanically, combat systems and the like may have improved, engines etc, but the storytelling itself remains horribly linear. Compared to something like Mass Effect or Dragon Age, the Japs are well behind the curve. But if you can put that behind you and let yourself enjoying being told a story more than actually living it, they can be a blast. I really enjoyed FF7. Star Ocean 3 and Tales of Vesperia, but have played far more and finished fewer still. Too many of them drag on, become dull and grindy, spend too much time on cutscenes and 'blather' (Xenosaga 2, Lost Oddyssey) or just feel... weird (Eternal Sonata, FFX).

I'll be reading a number of reviews for FF13 before I purchase. I'm in the market for a good JRPG again, but it needs to innovate.

Personally I love JRPGs. <3

I agree they are cliched, but honestly pretty much every damn story based genre is - Originality is rare.

I just like the different pace and take on world feel compared to Western RPGs. JRPGs just feel more open, epic and adventurous, with their grand vistas and rolling green hills. Compared to Western RPGs which are often overly realistic and full of dark visual hues.

But I love them both for different reasons.

Final Fantasy XIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
After FF VII got me hooked I played 6,8,9,10,12...havent looked back since. Also may i recommned the old school "Chrono Trigger" If u love FF u will love chorno Trigger.

Also WHY DO PEOPLE BUY GAMES FROM LOOK N LISTEN?!!?! Their prices are always blatantly more expensive, but they just seem to get away with it...

Most people don't look beyond what they know when buying things. They're comfortable buying from somewhere, haven't had any serious problems, so just continue to do so.

HAVE FF8!! bought a ps2 just to play ff8. and had ffX but thiefs broke into my house and stole it... sigh after so many months of looking for the game.. but sigh im not gonna buy a ps3 just to play ff13..

They are way to expensive , and get a away with it because ppl keep on supporting them

I still think the older FF games were better overall.

I was thinking about the characters in the Final Fantasy series the other night, and how I felt they went downhill in their originality and overall feel after FFIX. FFVII-IX had more interesting characters, but the characters from X onwards are okay-ish, but nothing great at all. Perhaps it has something to do with voice acting? I found that when reading you get a 'nicer' feel for a character in your head, rather than when some dodgy voice acting is used.

Don't get me wrong, this game is sweet. FFXIII and Tales of Vesperia are the best JRPG offerings for this current generation, (not like this gen has such a great variety of JRPGs to be honest). But I am enjoying it, but I think a lot of western orientated gamers may find issue with it, well more specifically with the JRPG genre as a whole (like Azimuth :p). Either you love it, or hate it.

This game has been quite a mixed bag for me so far.

The beginning seems super boring. The story telling is good, but the combat system tends to become boring very quickly. In my opinion, the build up takes a bit too long until new components are introduced.

But then once you get into the swing of things, it becomes good fun and at times quite challenging.

Yeah it takes like 20hrs before you actually get to play the game. Far too long, but once you do get to Gran Pulse it becomes more challenging.

I dont mind the linearness at all :) I've gotten all the way to Chapter 9 without any complaints! Cant wait to play more!!!

Wow, okay I was actually talking of the first 5 hours of gaming so far :D Haven't even gotten close to Gran Pulse (Whatever that might be) yet.

Perhaps I just ended on a high note, and when I get back to playing this weekend the cycle of: New addition(Excited and fun)>Get over it>Boring>New addition (Excited and fun) will repeat itself.

Didn't say that I don't enjoy the linearness mate. It's just the build up which seems fairly slow. Overall still a great game and I'm looking forward to the next time I can play again! :)
