5 franchise reboots that got it right

You think Prince of Persia (2008) got it right? O.o Sure it wasn't a bad game but it didn't really feel like a Pop game either.

Why would you include PoP 4 instead of Sand of Time? Sands of Time is pretty much the poster child for how to do a reboot correctly.

I'm still interested in playing Lords of Shadow even if mostly for the story, but once again the pesky time thing keeps getting in the way.

There were a few flaws with the game (Namely the combat), but all-in-all I felt it was a brilliant reboot for the series. The open world, the best platforming in any game to date (Outland being on par), the cell shaded graphics and the story elements were quite refreshing.

My favourite PoP to date.

Yeah, Sands of Time is a WAY! better reboot than Pop4.

I have Lord of Shadows, and while its not "bad" it just doesn't have any staying power. It feels like a sub par God of War Knockoff. Maybe I should try playing it again.

If 2 turns out to be good then I may pick up 1 for cheap just to get the story. :)

Did you play the Sand of Time Trilogy? Like I said, not a bad game, just not a good Pop.

the crystal dynamics tomb raider trilogy reboot (legend, anniversary, underworld)

Definitely this, I just wasn't quick enough to get online to post it lol.
Can't think of any other stand out ones that I have played that I can comment on.

I did. I played them on the PC and on the PS3 (HD remake). The Sands of Time was brilliant, I completely agree, but I found PoP 2008 to be a better game.

I found The Sands of Time to be awfully repetitive. As to the Prince, I preferred the wit and charm the Prince had in PoP 2008, but I preferred his noble nature in The Sands of Time.

Also wasn't a fan of the cell-shaded PoP, felt to scripted in the way he moved. Preferred the Sands of Time and it's two sequels.

I'm with Duke (and I guess the author of the article) on this one. Untill today I thought I was the only person on the planet that loves that game :p. I own Sands of Time and the other two that came after it, but I just could not get into it. Got bored about halfway through Sands of Time and never even bothered with the sequels, even though I own all of them.

The writing in PoP was brilliant and I loved how the two characters played off each other. Most people I know hate the game because you can't die, but I see Elika saving you everytime as a way to eliminate having to constantly reload a checkpoint if you miss a jump or something; instead of dying and watching a loading screen she just picks you up and you go on from where you stopped. While the combat system wasn't the best, it is a lot of fun once you get into the groove of things. Elika's awesome magical powers and the beautiful cell shaded graphics also played a part in me loving it so much. I also LOVED the ending. (SPOILER - highlight) It was so cool to see the Prince destroy everything he spent the whole game saving. Felt like the whole game was pointless and I loved that. Of course, the epilogue later explains more about why he did it, but still like to think he did it mainly out of love for Elika.

PoP 4 isn't bad, it's just not much of a reboot, it's more of an iteration. The only thing that really changed was the visual style, everything else was just expanding on what was already there.

Just spotted this (was too caught up in typing something about PoP :p).

I could not disagree with you more. IMO Lords of Shadow is better than GoW III in every regard. Better combat, better main character and story and one the best endings in the history of video games. Also, LoS is about 2 to 3 times as long as GoW III, depending on difficulty and player. Just waiting for a date announcement on the sequel so I can plan when to play it again.

And it has Patrick Stewart. And Robert Carlyle.

I didn't say God of War III, I wasn't that crazy abotu GoW III, IMO the franchise peaked with 2. ;)

I really should replay it again...

I probably also should have clarified more. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is better than the whole God of War series, especially GoW III. In my opinion, of course.

But yes, you should definitely play it again. This time finish it though, the ending is worth it.

Didn't see your post...

I don't think you call the HD trilogy a reboot, could you?

I think the best reboot in the TR series (And quite frankly should have been on the list) was TR Legend. Best TR game to date.

It brought Lara back from the sex icon she was turning into, got rid of whatever the devs were thinking when the made Angel of Darkness and turned her into a fully fleshed out female character. For once (In a very long time back then) the main attraction to playing Tomb Raider was not Lara's boobs but rather a bloody brilliant game as a whole.

I think the reason why Legends was such a successful reboot was due to the fact that Crystal Dynamics brought back the creator of Lara Croft (Toby Gard) as a sort of "consultant". He oversaw the game and gave his input, but was not hired as an employee.

legend was the reboot of the trilogy series, and it spawned anniversary a remake of tr1 but with storyline connections to both legend and underworld so chronologically it would be anniversary, legend and then underworld (storylinewise)
