AM3 Motherboard & DDR 1333 Pricing

if you wanna use onboard gfx get an amd based system, the gfx cores in their apu's are pretty impressive and you'll be able to game in 720p at medium graphical settings for most games. also remember you will be able to run hybrid crossfire if you get a compatible amd gfx card afterwards

What would it price? And where will I get one?

best bet is ask Joker, He's the goto Guy for Hardware pricing

not alot of the main hardware stores sell amd based products (apart from their radeons) in cape town, online would be your best solution in sourcing the components

I'd take a serious look at 2nd hand.

What your describing in terms of budget & target is really the sweet spot for 2nd hand. Lots of chinas out there with too much money dumping high end gear every <2 years. You could buy new, but I think it'll suck price/value wise for your scenario.

I know joker is active on carbonite & you've got decent rep here so I'm sure he'll be willing to guide you a bit to find a solid seller.

I've sent Joker a PM. Waiting on his reply.

Trying to avoid 2nd hand component purchases.

my suggestions (hopefully within your budget)

Motherboard (More info)
http://www.zapsonline.com/amd-fm2/63683-msi-amd-a75ma-e35-fm2-matx-motherboard.html (R822 @ zaps, say around R900 including shipping)

five_pictures1_2699_20120926160632.jpg

Cpu (More info) (some more info on the IGP)
http://www.takealot.com/computers/amd-a8-5600k-3-6ghz-quad-core-socket-fm2,27532278 (R1360 @ takealot)

Ram (two of these should get the job done)

an I3 will definately be faster in single threaded applications but since this is a true quadcore you will benefit in the long term since most new apps and games are becoming multi core reliant.

According to Gamedebate the onboard radeon seems to be faster than an 8800gt (similiar to what you have) in theory

Thank you very much, Dohc.

I may consider this option.

How would you rate Zaps and Takealot's services?

both are reputable, takealot also allows you to collect at their DC here in cape town
I'll speak to my dad and see if I can't start ordering these components so long.

Again, Dohc. Thank you.

This will work out cheaper than my original budget - which was borderlining 4 grand - given that I need a new cpu, ram, motherboard and tower case.

Tower case I will only be able to but in cape town in Jan.

Going to buy everything in Cape Town. Where is Takealot situated? Is Zaps also in Cape Town?

zaps is not in cape town however they usually ship pretty quickly, otherwise just try to source that exact motherboard from a local supplier in cape town

I've been weighing my options and it seems as though I'll be shopping by Wootware for my peripherals. It's a little over my budget, but, it'll work.

If you haven't bought the RAM yet, consider faster RAM. APU's love fast RAM.

I want to actually go for a faster RAM stick (preferably 1600MHz or higher), while not going over my budget too much.

As things are looking, I'll be going the Intel route. It's not a budget-friendly route, but it seems the only safe option right now. I also want to fit in a decent GPU -- a Radeon 7750 or 7770 -- at least, since I don't know how well the CPU's onboard GPU is like.

Buy soon....my crystal ball says the Rand is going to take another hit.

RAM...yeah 1600 should be easy. Above that the price will bite.

Razor might be right about the APU angle (seems solid to me) but since you're installing a discreet gfx thats irrelevant. So try for 1600 but 1333 would also be OK.

I know you said you don't want 2nd hand but for RAM you really should consider it...mainly because you can test reliably whether someone is selling you a bad stick. For most components I wouldn't trust 2nd hand either but RAM...sure. Lots of okes will be dropping 1333s so you'll likely find a respected member thats selling. The only catch is that the testing (memtest86+) takes quite a while which could be difficult to arrange logistics wise.

Thanks for your input.

Side note:

Anyone in Cape Town know where I can get a Radeon 7750 or 7770 at a retail store - locally.

Nothing over R1300.

I plan to buy the majority of goods from Café Viva, but they don't appear to have a great variety of stock in GPUs -- only Low and High range GPUs -- it seems.

Whats your budget? Instead of going Intel, why not get the FX-6300 and the M5A97 LE R2.0?

http://www.wootware.co.za/amd-fx-63...5ghz-4-1ghz-turbo-socket-am3-desktop-cpu.html

http://www.wootware.co.za/asus-m5a97-le-r2-0-amd-970-sb950-socket-am3-atx-desktop-motherboard.html ( I wouldn't overclock too much on this mobo though).

R 3163 for both.

The only Intels I find at that price point are i3's and I would take a 6 core over a dual core anyway. I understand Intel's single core performance is better, but dual cores are really beginning to struggle these days ( look at BF4 multiplayer benchmarks).

And if you were planning on going i5, that's really expensive, and you would be better off getting a better GPU imo.

Anyway, drank to much coffee tonight in case you were wondering about the time...

Wootware isn't an option for me, since I'm living in the NC and have to hope they have stock (and the right stock) if I buy from them. My dad wants to pay for the goods when he gets them (as per typical retail store shopping).

My budget is R4000 -- and calculating CPU, RAM, Motherboard and GPU, that puts me at R4400+.

I could order from Takealot or Wootware, through a contact in Cape Town, but, unfortunately, they're more than unwilling to assist me, so I have to take my own steps in completing my upgrade.

And this upgrade does not even include a tower case, so I may have to scoop out even more cash or use my old case - which I'd preferably NOT do. Want an entry-level Coolermaster case
