Carmack jumps on any bandwagon available to get into the limelight these days.
As for the new API AMD has, it can do so much and so little depending on how people make use of it.

Carmack is a lot like Lucas: The Creator and destroyer of their initial epicness. I'd hardly fancy anything coming from him TBH, because of this.

Mantle is going get interesting when its not just about who is using it, but when it also brings the OSes into play...

Truth be told I think of him as a bit like a Molyneux clone, only one that I actually like listening to. DOOM 3 BFG was also not worth the money, thankfully I never bought a copy.
