John Carmack, co-founder and technical wizard of the developer, says the company doesn’t plan to support dedicated servers for the multiplayer component of “Rage,” id’s upcoming new action game.

“It’s not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don’t think we will have dedicated servers,” he says.

Infinity Ward made the same decision for “Modern Warfare 2” and has been facing a massive backlash among its fans. The inevitable online petition has gathered over 183,000 signatures and even the developer has acknowledged the backlash.

“Modern Warfare 2” will use a matchmaking setup powered by IWNET for online play. It’s too early to say what Rage will use, but Carmack indicated he believed the servers are something of a remnant of the early days of PC gaming.

That said, he realizes the affinity many PC gamers have for them – and is glad “Rage” won’t be leading the charge away from them.

“The great thing is we won’t have to be a pioneer on that,” he says. “We’ll see how it works out for everyone else.”

Rage, meanwhile, appears to be on track for a 2010 release. But you might want to find a comfortable chair as you wait for the next “Doom” game.

“It’s looking realistic,” says Carmack. “We are on a crunch right now to do presentations for console first party manufacturers, so things are cooking along well for ‘Rage’. ‘Doom 4’ is obviously a bit further out.”

It all depends on what type of MP it'll be. Like for instance, P2P works great for L4D and Borderlands, but for games with lots of players, like MW2, it just sux.

I can honestly say that if these companies had not jumped straight into the whole Match making server scene and just out of the blue drop the dedicated servers... I think the public would have a whole different look on what is going on...

So in that, what I mean is if they had worked their way out of dedicated servers into the match making scene over time people would have been more comfortable with the move than just having something like this sprung on them at the last minute... The companies would also had made more money as they would have been able to release lets say Modern Warfare 2 with both dedicated server support as well as Match making support... Therefore saying that people would have been able to play both and still get the feel for playing on the match making servers.

The next step they could have done was released the next game with only match making support as players would have experienced it before hand with both functionalities and for the publishers it would have been a win win situation... but i guess with this sudden change comes a consequence for them as they are greedy... and didnt stop to think what the outcome for their actions would be

Well iD haven't made a decent multiplayer game since Quake 3 Arena so I wasn't exactly holding my breath for an amazing multiplayer component. The single player looks great though and now that they have EA as a publisher I doubt we'll see the game cost R100 more than it should ala Activision.

Correct sir.

Depends on the game. Battlefield, COD, those games are DEDI server games.

Borderlands, and other low player mainly co op games are perfect for P2P

L4D uses dedicated servers, especially useful for versus games.

P2P is workable with co-op since its hardly a competitive environment. Communities are hardly formed around co-op games as the games tend to come and go pretty quickly, its the competition that really seems to get people banding together to form long term communities. Rage seems to be going in the big single player component with co-op play direction.

If there is a competitive mode though (deathmatch, team deathmatch etc.), dedi servers aren't optional anymore.

it should read:

pc gamers: STFU
console gamers : you are a "safer" market, we care more for you

then again, JC has said they will be moving to more pro-console development...

Well rage will be a small multi player sect. It is more of a single player game any way. Even if it goes with dedicated servers I doubt any one will play it in this country.
