ATI 5870 - Who has the best price?

Did you even look at the benchmarks? the two 5870s beat a 580, never mind the measly 6970. And he paid R1500, so maybe would've had R3000 altogether if he sold his card, what would that have got him? maybe a 6950 if he was lucky.

Precisely! Why would I want to spend R4500 when for a third of that I'm getting better performance any way?

I was so happy when I got mine xD but already sold the one card lol. Im happy with my GTX580 and keeping the other 5870 for a rainy day :) Still thanking you for the tip Den!!

Oi. You know the xfire outperforms the 580 right?

Ah mate, The rate i chop and change cards it doesn't really bug me. I'll prob end up selling the 580 soon and get myself 2 x 6970's to crossfire. Just im already on the lvl where nothing I play even really tests my machine to the max. Will wait for Bulldozer and then do an all red machine

Well, if you wanna sell the 5870, I might know of someone willing to buy. Name your price.

Mmmmm i'll have to let you know...Tempted to hold onto it for awhile. For that rainny day that i get an itch that needs scratching lol
1 of my mates is already asking about buying it but i'll see xD

Den

dude thats amazing

and the logic behind your choice also makes sense

out perfroming the 580?

If i clock my gtx580 slightly it'll be on par with the 2x 5870's, thing is also dual setups ie crossfire and sli bring their own problems to the table. Even though it looks sick running 2 x cards, you usually end up having issues with heat or driver issues or compatibility issues with certain games ect. But to each their own :) I love all gfx cards lol

I have a mate that wants to sell his 2 x Gigabyte 5850's for R1500 each. Still warranty n stuffs left if anyone is interested *whistles*

For what he paid the performance gain is huge compared to selling his existing card and buying 2 newer models which might give him a minimal performance gain compared to this current setup.
No, 1 newer model. 2 will in most cases give better performance. But remember this was at a special price so it may not make sense for anyone else. I would also be wary of benchmarks for one game. 6970 in XFire e.g. has a frame rate drop in MW2 and HAWX 2 but not in Far Cry 2 and in Heaven2.1, Crysis Warhead and AvP it is near double. So the results in that test may have been in the 5870's favour but it doesn't mean it will perform as well in other games.

I was referring to Den's situation. Think he made the right call. Your solution would have cost him way more for (maybe) a few more fps in certain games. Bang for bucks, he came out tops.

I'm running the Sapphire 5870v2. it seems smaller than the regular model, temps and noise are outstanding. I haven't OC'd at all though, quite happy where it is for now. If anything I think my cpu is bottlenecking (940BE).

I know you were. ;) I was just pointing out that he would have replaced it with one newer card and not two and that we don't really know if the performance gains are that great.

Just read another review yesterday. The 6990 XFire also has decreased performance in MW2 while in most other games you get 50-100% gain. MW2 seems like a really odd choice to base a buying decision on.

"50-100%" what?

Over what? A Single card? I'm not sure what your point is here as the 6990 is way more than the 5870.
Exactly, that is how we normally compare CrossFire performance. A XFire setup over a single card.

My point is that CrossFire is a tricky beast to actually compare. In MW2 with the 6970 & 6990 it actually results in a decrease in frame rate while in most other games there is an increase. MW2 and a few other games seem to have an anomaly when it comes to CrossFire setups where it either works great or not at all.

Unless somebody is only going to play MW2 using that alone for a comparison doesn't give the overall picture.
