Best MMO to get me into the genre

I've been wanting to get a decent MMO for a while now, Ive never played a MMO ever.... What in your opinion would be the best MMO to get me started?

My thoughts are leaning toward Guild Wars - seems like a decent game with a good following even on this forum and the lifetime subscription is a major plus point.

Theres also eve online, but my only concern is the availability of it, I've only seen it available to download on steam. Are there any online stores that stock the game?

Then there the old favorite - WOW - I'm not to sure about this one to be honest, is this game over the hill so to speak? Do I need to purchase every expansion pack to be able to enjoy the game fully?

Some of the others that interest me :
Age of Conan
LOTR online
Dungeon and Dragons

Any suggestions?

The first MMO I ever played was Guild Wars and it is still my favourite to this day :). I also enjoyed Age of Conan even with the bugs and high system requirements at the time.

So my suggestion would be Guild Wars plus there is no sub :D.

naah, be like the rest of the sheep in the world.... go world of warcraft :D

GW is awesome. got all the collectors boxes except very first one :(

Guild wars was my first one too ... but it's not really an MMO in the sense of other people running around questing around you ... rather just people in the same outposts. You can essentially play the game by yourself just fine.

I would say WoW is a very good choice to start casually seeing as it has a much simpler learning curve for casual players. Guild wars requires a bit more thought when it comes to fights etc. than wow does.

So give the game a try with a 14day trial and see what you make of it.

A very important question:

How much time do you intend to play per week?

That will affect your choices. If you have little time then something like EVE and GW is a good idea. The other ones can be quite a bit more time consuming to keep up with.

As far as EVE goes, well, I have seen boxed versions a while back at BTGames and Zaps if I recall, however you will likely have to download the expansions which can be quite large - 500mb - 1gig-ish (most of the current MMO's will have large patches to come up to date).

Hahah! Yeah.

Well EVE is just a serious overload of info!

I also found FFXI Online to have quite a steep learning curve.

BTW - Playing EVE again >_>

+1 for guild wars

cheap way to see if you will like MMOs. Or you could always just get perfect world for free.
Made me realise I don`t like MMOs though.

My first mmo was Guild Wars too, but I'd say definitely go with World of Warcraft.

You can level from 1-80 in wow without grouping with a single other person, so it gives you loads of time to come to grips with how an mmo works and plays.

And although GW is free, you do get what you pay for with wow in terms of sheer content.

Again like I said - The time factor will make or break a MMO for most people.

While WoW is casual, it still requires an large amount of time invested to get to max level, especially for a new player. Also endgame in WoW is very demanding on the part of the players. Guilds and people will often just expect you to play everyday for 10hrs a day (or something crazy like that), or you do not make the grade and are dropped.

Guild Wars is a very light MMO (in my opinion), where you can get to max level and max gear FAST, which is a huge plus if you lack time. For me personally it lacks the depth and world consistency that the Pay-to-Play MMO's have, but it is still amazing for what it is.

EVE while having a pretty steep learning curve is very good in two departments. First its setting, which is largely unique in this genre, and is very well done.

Secondly how character progression works. Your character trains in real-time, and will even train when you are not logged in or playing. This can be a huge boon for people with limited time, but a shackle to people with too much free time.

Also communities are exceedingly important when playing MMO's. To be honest WoW and Guild Wars have terrible communities in general. Very immature and often exceedingly elitist. Now sure you can find great people in all games, but in games with tons of idiots you will have to deal with them no matter what. EVE seems to have a very mature community due to the difficultly of getting into the game. Last I checked LotRO also has a decent community.

Because I'm a freelancer I find myself working three months non stop with very little time for myself, then after that work is complete I will have say a whole month free to do as I wish. This is generally what happens, but the time spent working and having free time does fluctuate.

I reckon if you asking the question.... which MMO to introduce the genre.... you cant go wrong with WoW.... and if you find you enjoy the genre you do some research in regards to what you liked about WoW and what you disliked and move on from there... my favorite is Eve, think its amazing... you can do and be what ever you want in Eve.... once you learn how..

Guild Wars or World of Warcraft :)

The former works differently to most MMO's in that it's instanced, but World of Warcraft demands far more time.

I've decided to go with WOW, I've looked at a lot of gameplay videos and WOW just seems to be more my type of game. Eve online would be my second choice but I cannot find it anywhere other than through digital distribution.

I picked up a copy of WOW this afternoon at Look and listen. Now to get all those darn updates.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Nooooooooo! Save yourself Get FF11 instead! Delete that WoW virus before it infects you like aids! :D

LOL, you cannot stop me muhaha....

I've got FF11 on my old Ps2, dont get me wrong its a great series of games and I'm sure FF13 is awesome, I just cannot get into the game for some reason, I play it for a week and then get bored. Its one of those games that you either love it or hate it unfortunately.

Thanks for the offer, very generous.
