Budget Build for basic to moderate video editing.

Hey forum. I'm building a budget Pc for editing videos for YouTube. I'm torn between a pre-built corei5 Pc from Matrix warehouse for R5500 and a build from Rebeltech which consists of:

Cpu: i3 4170. R1865
Mobo:Gigabyte H81M-S1. R785
Ram: Kingston hyperx 4gb cl9. R411
Hdd: WD cb 1tb. R753
Case: cooler Master e343. R453
Psu: seasonic Sii12 530w. R838
Total: + delivery. R5460

The matrix build (I don't know the specifics)

Cpu: core i5
Mobo: h81
Ram: 2gb
Psu: 450w
Case: zixxa atx
Total : R5500

Which one is best? I will invest in a Gpu and an ssd sometime next year but I want to make HD videos(<10mins) in the meantime. Anyone who has purchased a matrix build please share your experience

Dunno about Matrix Warehouse, but you'll have a bad time trying to edit videos on 2 Gb of RAM. 4Gb is is going to be difficult enough, 2 Gb is just looking for trouble.
 
So a couple of questions, which application will you be using to edit the videos? Which OS are you intending to run? What would the average length and/or size of the video file be?

For prebuilt PC's, rather look at www.evetech.co.za. Unfortunately I don't really have experience with video editing so I can't really comment on the requirements.

However, for comparison, this is what you can get at evetech for similar pricing/specs:

i3 Skylake R4899

i5 Haswell R5899

What is also nice about evetech is that you can take a build and change components as you like.
Hopefully someone else can pitch in regarding requirements for video editing :)
 
Dude, just go i5 with 8GB RAM and you'll be ok...

Consider an SSD and/or a RAID0 drive setup to get maximum performance

Also, I was curious about the i3 vs. i5, so I asked my brother, who's a video editor for a living, how much CPU's you need. His answer: as many as will fit in the box. Granted, he does it on very white machines that are overpowered and overpriced, so he might be biased.

Yeah, I know a lot of people in the film, TV and audio arena and depending on the application and the size of the content you can easily prep yourself for i7's/Xeons, 32GB RAM and SSDs in RAID0/RAID10 configurations...

I found it interesting that the network is becoming the bottleneck. The place my brother works at does lots of motion capture work, so getting the high fidelity data from the camera's and other sensors to the servers, and then from servers to post production workstations and back at real time is where the magic lies now.

Unless I completely misunderstood the video he sent me some time back... :confused:

Yup, this audio producer mate of mine's workstation has a 40GbE card in it and it ultimately connects back to a NAS with 8 x 10GbE connections per controller (of which they have two in an active-active configuration) with 420 x 200GB SSDs (about 45 TB of space) . Basically everything is gearing up for near real time capture of Audio and Video streams with as little time as possible between saving your work and waiting for it to be written to disk.
