I could be wrong, but I get the impression that this is someone who is looking to make a few bucks by riding on the coattail of the Comic Con name. I therefore question whether it will even happen again next year, because if this one sucks, they're going to have a hard time attracting those who bite the bullet and attend this year.
This is pretty much the impression I'm getting as well. I keep comparing this with KIN CON which is being organised up in Randburg - and for obvious reasons.
The entry price, especially for a first time event, is ridiculous. KIN CON is hosting a 1 day event and asking an entry of R30. A single day event is a much better way to gauge interest and plan for future events. To put things in perspective - the SDCC has an asking price of $175 for the entire 4 day event which includes access to the preview night. Leaving aside the rate of exchange, this seems a lot more reasonable.
KIN CON's organiser has been very open with all her preparations for the event, and she has been in full planning mode for most of the past year. She's been actively talking, not only with role-players, but with the community itself, asking for opinions and suggestions. We've seen pictures of the venue, pricing for advertising and promotion has been clearly stated, the event venue is in a hall (community center) with its own parking.
It doesn't have a website - it doesn't need one, but the Facebook page is ample enough - I'm sure there will be room for a site down the line - https://www.facebook.com/kinconSA/
If you want to see something that might grow to rival US Cons one day, there it is. This supposed Comic Con, however, tramples on the idea of what the event is supposed to be.
