DLC / Season Pass / Premium

This has been on my mind for while now, probably some threads here about it too. But I would like to post my pov. I am a little tired of these extremely opinionated people on the internet. God I sometimes wish for 90's with low polly games, with LAN, no DLC or expansions. Fewer games, less internet...anyway, not my point.

Game extras, and please feel free to correct me. in the 90s and early 2000s, games werent as "detailed" and technical as they are now, both from a technical pov like Battlefield for example with bullet drop, bullet penetration, large scale stats, etc.

Secondly, level of detail, just stuff that goes into making the game visible and enjoyable to us. From purdy reflective glass/water, to city vistas, to forests to the female body. But not only that, the stuff that happens down in the engine and guts, the programming of how the game works and renders. With AMD and nVidia competitive technologies, that just makes it so much easier....

All the above, be that the engine, modeling, sound or graphics, isnt just produced as quick as when John Carmack, Romero or Cliff Bleszinski first started of with a team of about a dozen guys.

Take textures today, they are a hundred times more detailed and involved that say a simple Quake 2 texture. Sound? Imagine the backlash if the sound on your uber Sennheizer earphones are up to par. Same with anything that together makes a game.

More developers are needed to produce games, more time, better tools and time is needed. You simply cant create a game in the same way id Software made Doom or guys created Duke, Diablo or any olf classic game.

Because it takes so much more money and time, a good idea is to sell DLCs. One example I think is great, is the Battlefield 3/4 Premium package. You get so much more, basically double the original game, and one good point, it makes the game last longer. Same thing with the first Borderlands 1 DLCs, they were great, and the same with Borderlands 2....well until you bought the season pass and then quietly told, "Errmmm, that season pass doesnt include all the DLCs"

imho, IMHO, I think people these days tend to cry and moan over every little thing behind their keyboard....why? Because their fucking lives are so damn boring and they cant do anything for themselves, so ride the wave of the internet, dont think, just follow.

Now obviously, as with anything, its not a 100% clear cut case that every. Fallout 4 for example, why did they have to say they are unsure where the DLCs are head, stfu! Ot everything in your R&D needs to be made public. In all likelihood, it will rock, like the previous ones did.

My point I am trying to make it, DLC/Premium/Season Pass arent always that bad, games these days arent just magically built and sold, a lot of work goes into them, much more than before, to really see how much, when you complete a game, sit and watch the credits...

This way, a dedicated dev can give more to the game following the release for some extra money.

bleh, brainfart is over...

It's clear that DLC/Season Passes/Premium are here to stay and aren't always bad in that they can add value to the game. My problem with them is that their existence often makes it feel like when you purchase the base game (even at full price) you're not getting the complete package. And so often, in order to get what feels like the complete game, you have to spend ridiculous amounts of money.

A great example of how the whole DLC/Season Pass/Premium model can destroy a game is that of Evolved. There was a ludicrous amount of DLC for the game on day 1. In my eyes 2K are are one of the worst offenders in terms of trying to milk the consumer through DLC nonsense.
What is even more damning of DLC etc. is that the developer Turtle Rock had made the Left 4 Dead games under Valve - these games had no DLC, you got the complete experience from the get go. Not only that, more levels were added for free. Not only that, all the levels and characters from the first game were ported over into the second. As a result, there are many people playing L4D2 to this day. Whereas Evolved was pretty much dead in a few short months. Now the quality and depth of each game aside, I believe the way the additional content was handled played a huge role in how long each game lasted and how well it selled.

CD Project Red does things right with the Witcher. DLC in the form of expansions is fine. Microtransactions can eat a bag of ****s.

I have mixed feelings around DLC. I'm all for DLC that adds to the title in a meaningful way, like extra missions, maps, quests or worlds to explore. What I don't agree with is crap DLC which only adds eye candy. Prime example of crap DLC is Batman Arkham Knight which has Classic TV Series Catwoman Skin, Classic TV Series Robin Skin, 1970s Batman Themed Batmobile Skin, 2016 Batman v Superman Batman Skin, 2016 Batman v Superman Batmobile, Riddler Themed Batmobile Skin, Robin Themed Batmobile Skin, Original Tim Drake Robin Skin, 2008 Movie Batman Skin & Original Arkham Batmobile. Dafaq, so useless. Anyways.

I'm quite happy with Season Passes/GOTY editions and the like as this at least softens the blow of the barrage of DLC that can come your way, especially if the bulk of the DLC is useless skins and crap. However I don't agree with Day 0 or release day DLC. That's just lazy, if it was ready on the day of release it should have been included in the release.

I'm also not a fan of pay-to-win or micro transactions, it's starting to border on extortion. What ever happened to just be good at playing the game? Now it's "I have weapon X from crate Y which gives me a boost of Z"

I think, it has a lot to do with how a dev handles it. Evolve, as DarthMol suggested, killed the game. Luckily the Deus Ex ManKind decided to can that stupid pre order thing of theirs.

CD Project Red is the gold standard wrt to DLC and additional content imho.

Also agree with PsychoFish, Day 0 is a joke, same with on Disc stuff.
