This has been on my mind for while now, probably some threads here about it too. But I would like to post my pov. I am a little tired of these extremely opinionated people on the internet. God I sometimes wish for 90's with low polly games, with LAN, no DLC or expansions. Fewer games, less internet...anyway, not my point.
Game extras, and please feel free to correct me. in the 90s and early 2000s, games werent as "detailed" and technical as they are now, both from a technical pov like Battlefield for example with bullet drop, bullet penetration, large scale stats, etc.
Secondly, level of detail, just stuff that goes into making the game visible and enjoyable to us. From purdy reflective glass/water, to city vistas, to forests to the female body. But not only that, the stuff that happens down in the engine and guts, the programming of how the game works and renders. With AMD and nVidia competitive technologies, that just makes it so much easier....
All the above, be that the engine, modeling, sound or graphics, isnt just produced as quick as when John Carmack, Romero or Cliff Bleszinski first started of with a team of about a dozen guys.
Take textures today, they are a hundred times more detailed and involved that say a simple Quake 2 texture. Sound? Imagine the backlash if the sound on your uber Sennheizer earphones are up to par. Same with anything that together makes a game.
More developers are needed to produce games, more time, better tools and time is needed. You simply cant create a game in the same way id Software made Doom or guys created Duke, Diablo or any olf classic game.
Because it takes so much more money and time, a good idea is to sell DLCs. One example I think is great, is the Battlefield 3/4 Premium package. You get so much more, basically double the original game, and one good point, it makes the game last longer. Same thing with the first Borderlands 1 DLCs, they were great, and the same with Borderlands 2....well until you bought the season pass and then quietly told, "Errmmm, that season pass doesnt include all the DLCs"
imho, IMHO, I think people these days tend to cry and moan over every little thing behind their keyboard....why? Because their fucking lives are so damn boring and they cant do anything for themselves, so ride the wave of the internet, dont think, just follow.
Now obviously, as with anything, its not a 100% clear cut case that every. Fallout 4 for example, why did they have to say they are unsure where the DLCs are head, stfu! Ot everything in your R&D needs to be made public. In all likelihood, it will rock, like the previous ones did.
My point I am trying to make it, DLC/Premium/Season Pass arent always that bad, games these days arent just magically built and sold, a lot of work goes into them, much more than before, to really see how much, when you complete a game, sit and watch the credits...
This way, a dedicated dev can give more to the game following the release for some extra money.
bleh, brainfart is over...
