Does this sound normal to you?

So my ADSL has been up and down since Wednesday, telkom apparently "upgraded" my line to 10MB but it failed.

Now I have had a techy here today and he tells me nothing is wrong after they dropped my back to 4MB.

Now my line is crap, I can't watch you tube vids without pausing and waiting 20 mins.

This is what I got from speed test.

Download - 2.45

Upload - 0.35

What should I be getting on a 4MB line?

Seems kak?

Depending on the ISP, you should get 4mb/s.

I would check your router for a sync speed, if it is lower than 4mb/s then you need to get the techie back.

Hey Grim

Speed issues come in 4 flavours:
1. Router sync is unstable
2. Local exchange is congested
3. ISP's local speeds suck
4. ISP's intl link slow

Post ISP name & package and also the ADSL line stats (SNR, attenuation and anything involving line errors).

Run speed tests against a local FTP. e.g. mirror.ac.za using a download manager (e.g. FDM). Those speedtest things aren't real world enough for my liking.

I doubt the sync is at anything other than 4mbps, but you can check.

If the exchange supports 10mb then they should have dropped you down incrementally, not straight to 4mb. This "failed" upgrade business doesn't sound right.

First work out why you're not getting 4mbps speed (local) [I'm thinking its an ISP issue for that], then if thats resolved ask telkom to start at 10mb & drop you down incrementally from there.

For the youtube vids, find the thread on mybb that deals with forcing local google services via hosts file.

Not all lines can handle 4Mb. Maybe you were on something below that before. They should have checked for that first but Telkom is as Telkom does.

Who is your ISP?
Telkom would be the provider for the ASDL Line. Unless you are also using telkom for your Data. Perhaps give the ISP a call and ask if they can do a test from your side? See if that cant help.

I got bumped up to, 1Mb/s via Telkom/Mweb from 512Kb/s for Free. 1 week later I noticed the speed increase.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

I am on Webafrica, 30GB account with redafrica (100 GB after hours).

This is the weirdest thing:

I was using a spare Netgear modem from work and that connected straight away and it was perfect until I decided to do a factory reset on it now it won't connect to the net at all, just get a red light. :wtf:

I checked all the settings and they are fine. Dunno wtf is going on right now.

EDIT: OK I did another reset and let the wizzard do the work and now this modem is working. Still slow. Sigh.

I would say phone Webafrica first. Find out if they cant see anything on their side... Since we all know how long Telkom takes to reply use them as a last resort or if the problem is a telkom one.

4MB line should be getting:

download: 4~5
upload:~1

still inaccurate though since 2.45 is relatively high and shouldn't struggle with youtube
