Game "expired"

So, this a first for me, I never played the game, got it in a bundle I bought some time ago, but will this be the fate of more and more games in the future?

The Darkspore servers have shut down on the 1st of March I think. Like I said, I never played the game, but I mean, I paid for the game...I know, the whole STEAM thing also based on that you dont own the games or something, but wth? Miss the old days of discs and keys..

Tribes 2 also suffered the same fate, but luckily some committed community members got the game going again.

Also, here is LGR on the matter too.

Don't put Steam in the same boat as Origin.

Do Steam subscription purchases expire?

No. Games purchased through Steam do not expire - you will only be charged once for permanent access to the game through your Steam account. Purchased games can be downloaded as often as needed and to any computer with an internet connection.

I have plenty of games in my Steam lib that was taken off the market or network servers where taken offline and I can still download the games. Once its on your account it stays, not like EA or Games for Windows live crap, hell "expired" GFWL and EA games are still available on Steam even after the others stopped them on their services.

I am not trying to start this vs that service, I am done with those wastes of time, I buy and play a game regardless of the service its available. All I am saying is, regardless of download service, more games in the future might go this way where it is unplayable because their will be no more authentication servers.

a darkspore was never meant to be played offline, kinda like PC Diablo 3.
b You've never even played it up till now...

a you bought it knowing it was tied to online, so knowing it had a limited lifespan.
b ...you would never have

A: So in other words, Diablo 3 will also become unplayable.
B: Thanks for stating that fact again.

Yes it will, unless sometime in the future they change it to be like the console versions that you can play offline.
imho do not expect a much longer lifespan after Diablo 4 etc come out.

As for the "never played it", we all have tons of games in our libraries from bundle deals that you have never touched and will never touch because there is always something new coming out.
:p
like the division, which I'm curious about, but I can only play single player so I know I have to wait. Maar my gat juk...ad nauseam

As long as companies control servers and don't allow people to set up their own, online games will continue to die.
