Gaming in summer, prepare yourself for the heat

The days are getting longer, the pool is getting warmer, and you see fewer people dressed as the Michelin man walking around shopping centres – all of this means summer is definitely on its way.

While summer has its good points, gamers need to make sure their system can handle the weather changes as well as they can. Is your system ready?

You just had to remind me that Transvaal summer is coming. Time to dust of the fan and unpack the dive gear.

Transvaal... did someone just invent a time machine without telling me?

Got an aircon on the wall above the PC. Its for my wifes business but I score hecticly. I over heat as soon as the thermo hits above 23 degrees.

Jeez, lightning. One night, I almost lost all three consoles to it, had I not unplugged everything not 30 seconds before the strike. Everything else (that I could not get to) in the house was fried.

I've had some doozies at my place as well.

Eish ya, highveld thunder storms are hectic. Hardware sales go through the roof when the lightning starts

Yeah. Just out of curiosity, will surge protectors work if your house gets klapped by lightning? Isn't lightning a lot more powerful than your average run of the mill power surge?

(I don't know much about electricity)

Yeah surge protectors aren't going to stop a lighting strike, especially a direct hit. Those are more for things that come down the line like 5-10km away, or caused by the power going off and on.

Yeah perhaps I should just get a few of those in anyway (already have a bunch). I normally just unplug the entire entertainment section of the house when a storm rolls in...

I use them on everything, very useful especially with the dodgy power situation in this country. :) But when the lighting comes around, only thing that will work is to unplug.

Ha I remember that a mate of mine unplugged everything in his house, but the DSTV cable from the dish was still plugged into the decoder. Smashed everything.

Normally the first thing to get taken out is my router since lightning can hit like 10km away and still fry it, also lost ethernet ports by forgetting to unplug them after unplugging the power.

I wonder if the distribution board surge protector works any better against lightning than the plug ones?

Although down in CT we don't have that many lightning storms

At my old work, I saw one of those surge protector plugs from a client that had had a lighting strike nearby, and the capacitor had blown a big hole in the plug.

I have seen those distribution board protectors all blown up after a strike. I don't think there is much that can stand up to a lightning strike. Yeah you guys in the Kaap are safe :)

Ja that stuff doesn't really do anything for direct strikes, as I have learned in this thread. Scary stuff. Doesn't go well with my astraphobia.

Eish, the heat klaps me in summer - PC in a room that gets evilly hot during the day - will need to so something radical this year (problem is aircon's is expensive)
