Sorry if this has been covered before but,

I want to upgrade my graphics card, currently have a 9500GT which works fine provided I wind it up in the morning and make sure theres enough coal to keep it running :o

I've seen the 9800GT and GTS250 for round about the same price (only in the market for R1500+- unfortunately) on Take2, which one would you guys recommend? I know the GTX range is the best (or at least thats what I'm told) - whats the deal with the GTS?

The GTS250 is faster than the 9800, i'd go for that one. Why don't you check out prophecy.co.za? They have much better prices than take2. I'd also advise you to take a look at the Radeon 4850. One can be had for as little as R1000 and it's just about as fast as the 250.

Yeah I checked the 4890, little bit out of the range at the moment. 4850 looks like a good deal - what is actually the difference between 512MB and 1GB performance wise anyway? Suppose either one is a step up from what I currently have. (sorry, I'm a sound guy, not a graphics guy !)

What screen do you have....? You can also look at this if you're willing to stretch your budget a little:

If you get the HD4850. pls get the 512mb version. my brother aswell as myself has had major issues with the 1GB version. And also pls note HD4850 is notorious for jagged shading issues in some games. So u know what u getting yourself in.
It's rare but a patch fixes specific games.

It's a great card otherwise :)

I have a 23" Acer - that card from your link looks good - price isn't bad at all!
Checked out the company pricelist - some very good promotions. So the 4870 512 is a good deal - or is it really worth spending extra and getting the 1GB version?

Thanks for the info - much appreciated !

what memory size to get on a card is dependent entirely on wat size ur screen is - urs is pretty big so i'd recommend the 1GB version.

plz dont get a 9800 or GTS250, the ati have much better bang for buck at the moment.

this is by far the best option for you, in ur pricerange:

HD 4870 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E DUAL DVI-I / TVO - Asus R 1,469 incl.

from: http://www.pcint.co.za/components.php

1GB 4870 for under R1500? That's def the best u'll find in that pricerange.
