Graphics card failure?

So my computer froze while I was playing WoW last night and my only option was to restart my PC. When it loaded back to the desktop it had these vertical lines running down the screen :(. The lines also appear in the BIOS, safe mode and when XP is loading. In device manager under display adapters it says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)", i'm using a 8800GTS 320mb. Installing the latest or a older version nvidia driver doesn't help either.

Here's a screenshot of my desktop:

Everything on my PC was updated and working perfectly before it froze.

Intel e6320 1.87GHz
2 gig RAM
Nvidia 8800GTS 320mb
Asus P5k mobo
Windows XP

Any help would be great.

Have you tried running your onboard card or installing another gfx card becoz u will have to cross out the possibilities that it is ur gfx card.... if you still experience this problem after installing the other card then its a possibility that its the PCI slot on ur MOBO... give that a shot ;)

well seeing as ur mobo doesn't have any onboard gfx, i would suggest trying out another gfx card you have lying around or ask one of your mates. Barring that, try to take it to someone else's house :)
If it's still giving you issues, then u know it's ur PCI-E slot.
Either way it's gonna work out the same amount if you want to replace either we a good replacement :/

@OP

Its strangely the exact same problem that happened to my (exact same card) 8800GTS 320...

You've gotta scrap it :( I tried everything - testing a different mobo (in case it was my mobo) testing a different card (in case it was the PCI-E slot)...I even stripped my card and tried cleaning the heatsink

I dunno whats up with those cards :o

Overheating, eventhough they had huge coolers. Specially the 320 Version, very strange. my 640's in SLi run smoov smoov, not a day's hassles.

I heard of alot of GTS320 cards that went down the toilet.

That SmartDoctor app that came with my card never once gave me a heating warning - the temp didn't rise past 55 degrees

Ok I just found out it's definitely the 8800GTS thats the problem :(. So I need some advice on which card to get now. I have max R1500 to spend and of course it has to be better than the 8800GTS. What about the 9800GT?

XFX GTS 250 512MB DDR3 Standard Edition
R 1499.00

GTS250 512MB - PCI Express 2.0 - Core: 738Mhz / Memory: 2200Mhz

if you could only manage another R500 extra, you could get a GTX260
XFX GTX 260 896MB DDR3 Standard Edition 576Mhz / 1998Mhz
R 2099.00

And this is from a retail store, from suppliers is MUCH CHEAPER

Or maybe sqeeeeeze out R100 more and get this----> XFX ATI Radeon 4870 512MB DDR5 - Standard Edition R1,599.00:D

I read reviews about the GTS250, not so good. It's a re-hash of the 8800,9800 cards.
Even the GTX250 is a remade 9800GT+. Essentially buying into older technology.

Honestly, i would opt for a HD4850 and if you can borrow some extra money somewhere ideally HD4870 ;)

That computersonly 4870 special is unreal - but they're perennially out of stock. I've been begging them to contact me for ages now about it and they just never have it in.

PCInt has the 512mb gts250 for R1500. That is a great price. Nothing wrong with the gts 250 - ok it's a rehash of the 9800gtx+ but it's better than the 4850 in a majority of tests plus it has a LOT less power consumption.
Digitalplanet has the iceq 1gb 4850 for R1500, also a good deal.
