Graphics Card in R1000-R1500 range

Can someone explain to me how a Thread works -- in conjunction with the cores.

I Googled it last night, and what IKd read was a Thread being a simulated core -- but I still don't understand what its purpose is.

Is it 2 Cores(+4)? As it is 2 Cores/4 Threads. And are these simulated threads running at the same clock speed as that of the 2 "real" cores?

A technical or layman explanation will suffice.

Thanks.

The way I understand it is that a core is a thread so if you got a 8 core amd it has 8 threads, it gets a bit tricky with intel because they have hyper threading on there i7's which means a 4 core i7 has 8 threads. I'm not a techie so dont take my word for it.
To add too the question is a hyper threaded i7 core as good as two i5 cores ?

Right so...

My brother is going to be buying me a PC box, and I'll be using my 8800GT in the meantime, until I can save up for something like a GTX650.

Thanks for all who had assisted and guided me in my decision-making regarding my new PC. I truly appreciate(d) it. :)
