How much money South Africa’s best gamers really make

WTF - I was expecting more like a couple hundred k.

To me this article should more read "SA has no professional scene and thus zero prize money".

So kids...study super hard then you can make that 8k in a couple days at work and save yourself 350 days a year.

This is surely coutning only prize money and not hardware. I mean i was no where near what Enegy and bravado won but i made around 30k in gear in one year. Still pretty far off from the EU standards but i still think its a lot more than 8 k. lots of local lans back then with a R1k gear and we tend to go around and compete for it. Id say guys like bvd is making 100k odd if they win all the events

To be honest, with those figures you cant call someone in SA a professional gamer.

A definition of a professional is

engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as an amateur.

If you cant sustain yourself your not really getting anywhere... Until sponsors start to seriously come to the party, the "professional" gaming scene in SA wont exist... And its not really fair to expect someone to be a professional at anything when they cant fully devote their time to it...

This is also a good point... Assuming they can sell the hardware on...

But also even though Hearthstone is a huge game internationally, and has a big following here in SA, it does seem that games like Counter Strike, Dota and League of Legends, seem to get more support locally. I mean MSSA doesnt even feature Hearthstone. I know the article was quite broad, but i dont think R8000.00 for a Hearthstone player can really give you a true indication of the eSports scene...

The DGL last year awarded the Hearthstone winner R10 000.00,
