How to check your RICA status: deadline 30 June 2011

If people havent RICA'd their stuff by now, they're just stupid!! I did mine 2 years ago....
 
I am going to be forced to RICA my Sim today, I've held out until now because it is the single most futile, idiotic waste of time that any telecommunications or government department has ever thought up

Agreed. The whole point supposedly is to be able to track criminals who use cellphones to plan their crimes. Because you know, criminals don't steal phones and use them. They rather go out and buy their own and RICA them with their actual adresses, because you know, criminals are such law abiding citizens.

What a massive waste of time and money. Government, working for you!
 
my MTN and 8ta stuff is RICA'd

my vodacom sim is not I HOPE they block it because I dont want/need it anymore

Im willing to bet they will extend it YET AGAIN
 
so what happens when you rica your contract sim card and cancel the contract or contract expires? is the number still yours? or can the service provider sell that number again?

The normal churn procedures apply; they may be different for each provider. Once the SIM has been inactive for X months (usually 3 months) the operator will recycle the number. When the number is next given to a new customer they will have to go through the RICA process to have the number registered against their name.

The whole system is not implemented correctly
A) - I can RICA as many simcards to my name as I want - This allows users like me to be able to RICA a load of simcards for modems etc to my individual name

B) - There is no accessible database that service providers can use to RICA your additional simcards, ie, if I am already on the system I cannot simply go into a Vodashop and give them my name or ID Number, I have to carry around a box full of paperwork and an ID book to have this done, why no centralization you ask ? Simple, because this is once again an excercise in futility, sounded like a good idea before implementation but what practical uses does it have

If there is no way in real time that people can access the database, there is no way in which anything positive can be done with this DB aside from profiling a massive databse of users for telemarketing

Seriously, the only practical use ever listed for this was to assist in crime prevention, now think about that for a second
How are crimes going to be prevented by Vodacom submitting all of their millions of users to the RICA act?
Will they know that I phoned in that bomb threat because the simcard is registered to my name?
Thats BS, and is totally inadmissable in court, it does not serve as proof, unless they locked down the system preventing transfers of simcards to other individuals, which they haven't

Bottom line is, some idiot decided that this was a good idea, in all likelyhood while bored or with nothing to do at work one month.
The system is not well thought out and is poorly implemented
In fact with other operators now advertising PRE RICA'ed Sims, htf are we expected to take this seriously, how can you pre register a sim, easy, do it to someone elses name and then sell it off, which is essentially what has been happening for the past two years

As an example, the garage down the road from where I live have been selling the pre regged cards for ages, the garage owner RICA's them and then sells them, so how does that influence crime prevention then ?

If I did not need my Cell number for work I would have told them to go screw themselves tbh, go ahead cut off the very people that make your bottom line at the end of every financial year look better, switch off the users who are on contract, who have already provided you with both ID's and proof of residence to obtain that contract and who pay premium rates for sub standard service

I will have 17 3G Simcards and two Contract Simcards RICA'd to my name, but I have access to almost double that on both items from sims RICA'd on other names and sold to me

Also, this applies to ISPs so you have to go through all those hoops when opening a new account and even buying once-off ADSL data. Ridiculous.
 
Let's face it, Some knob, as Xero said, was bored at work and thought this out, proposed it and now he has gotten a fat raise and we have to put up with this crap.

I reckon someone somewhere is making a crapload of money out of this somehow. Maybe by selling the database off to telemarketers? Who knows.

Also, even if this was thought out perfectly and the system worked, how would the cops know I'm using my cell to plan n heist or some other nefarious activity? Are they allowed to tap into your phone calls?

DITTO.

There are so many ways this is going to fail just like FICA and no benefit at all. I give it 6 months at most before it is seen as the tremendous failure it is just like outcome based education that was also tried and rejected in other countries. They should rather spend precious time on ways to curb the ANC corruption but in the mean time I'm not going to give them my real address just so they can sell that off to the ANC and DA as well.
 
I received an SMS a while ago saying that I RICA'ed, but I never did. I checked my RICA status, and according to them I am RICA'ed.

I then phoned Vodacom, who said they have no idea, and I need to get a police affidavit and bring it to them to un-RICA the person who RICA'ed.....

What a waste of time!!!!!!

The same thing for 2 people who work in my office.... So now I have no idea what is going on, according to one guy Vodacom RICA'ed all their contract customers with their contract details, to ensure we dont get cut off('cos they will lose money if they cut us off). If this is the case though, WHY THE HELL does Vodacom employees not know this, and tell me to get police interaction etc???

This whole RICA thing just pisses me off!
 
Well I cant even check if I am or not since Ive stopped getting a signal since 10am . . . Altho I only got my contract a year ago and remember taking proof of address and so forth with me when applying for the contract. That in my mind says Rica.
