“Oh god oh god,” goes everyone. “What’s Carmack’s job title again?” Don’t worry - he’s founder and technical director. Rather, it’s ponytailed Quakecon fixture Todd Hollenshead who’s picking off the gibs and extricating himself from the tentacles of one of the world’s premier FPS studios. And it's not just because he keeps getting Todd Howard's mail.

“After many years with the studio, Todd Hollenshead decided to leave id Software to pursue other personal interests," Bethesda's Pete Hines told IGN. "While Todd was not part of the development teams, he was an integral part of id Software’s success as the business head of the studio and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”

Hollenshead’s departure comes as the business of id is being reshaped by outside hands for the first time in its history. Hollenshead’s role switched from CEO to president at the time of Bethesda’s acquisition in 2009, and it was Bethesda who made the decision to “refocus” the studio around the struggling Doom 4 earlier this year. A sequel to Rage is also rumoured to have been cancelled in the process.

The reason? As with Prey 2, the publisher deemed Doom 4 to be below the bar of “quality and excitement” they now expect from games in their stable (though unlike Prey 2, it seems id agreed with them).

Is Hollenshead id’s most significant loss since Romero?

Well, id Software games have been pretty average to say the least for quite some time. The real meat n potatoes of id Software is their coding expertise - ZeniMax owns the company so they will be wise to maintain that element of id Software because they can use the tech for their other production studios, such as Bethesda. If that means letting id indulge in Doom 4, then I'm all for it!

The last few engines they made didn't actually impress me all that much, it seems they have a thing for low quality textures, ever since Doom 3 came out.

Release a decent quality Doom 4, or whatever future-planned release you have, then close down. "whistling:

Find it pretty harsh that people want a company to close down because they don't make the games they want.

In the last 2 years, rage came out in 2011.
in the last 10 years they've released 3 games, of which one was shite and the other 2 were "ok"

ok 4 games if you include Enemy Territory, which I enjoyed most in that lot

I must admit, the id from the 1990's was better. But then everything was better back then.

I still have respect for them considering they gave me something to do in my childhood. :) Even though I shouldn't have been playing their games at that age.

id has made some of my favourite games. Quake/Doom 3 is high up there.

Edit: How the actual shit could I forget about Wolfenstein (2009)<-----(Proud owner) and Quake 4 ?

Those aren't really id games. They were both developed by Raven, I seem to recall.

Geez! I just barely have memories of this song.
This my brother had it back when he still had his PSOne.
