LINUX FOR PS3 INSTALLATION GUIDE
So you’re here to install Linux on the PS3, right? OK, so follow the instructions exactly below and you’ll be on your way to installing Linux! Have fun!
Before we begin, I ask that you have the PS3 fully functional and working before doing this. Also, we will be installing Yellow Dog Linux (a popular form of Linux for the PS3)
1. Go to this LINK and follow ALL instructions
2. Once the above is FULLY completed, go to this LINK
3. Once ALL instructions are followed, you may now start using Linux on your PS3! You’re completed! Now start downloading free programs like openoffice.org etc…
See, how simple was that!

Please Post your feedback if u successfully installed it :)

Regards

Test it on my Friends PS3 console some time ago 40G Fat system and it worked 100%
Will definitely install Linux on the PS3 if i win one ;)

NECRO!!!!

bosluis, you would be able to dual-boot after an installation like this, if it were still possible on the new consoles. The functionality to install Linux has been removed from the PS3 in newer software upgrades.

Having a dual-boot would mean that you could use your PS3 as an actual PC, with keyboard and mouse, as a Media PC or whatever. Then after a reboot, you can boot up the PS XMB and it would be a normal PS3.

Not trying to revive an old thread, but why start a new thread for the same subject (at least I searched first) =P

Now, has anyone actually done this and how viable is this ?
See, my PC has recently konked out and wondering if this would be a viable option, and upon doing this could I brick my PS3 ?
How easy is it, to go back to stand-alone PS3 XMB ?

You won't be able to anymore as the security was patched up already, unless you have a really old phat ps3 on firmware 3.55 or older. Or even a Custom FW PS3 can do.

Installing linux on the ps3 will not add any functionality, but should feature as any other PC. Just dont expect to play any ps3 games on it though as that functionality wont exist on linux.

True that you will need a PS3 that has basically never done any updates, But if you manage to achive getting the PS3 back to a version older than 3.55 you will be able to dual boot the system either to PS3 OS or to Linux, I did do it on mine, but found it to be a waste of time and just formatted my drive and reinstalled the PS OS and did a back up...
