Apple announces fourth generation iPad, iPad Mini

Apple announced the iPad Mini Tuesday at the California Theater in San Jose, Calif. The highly-anticipated tablet computer is a smaller, cheaper version of the tech giant's popular iPad, and a fourth generation iPad.

Apple chief executive officer Tim Cook started off the event saying, ""We have some very fond memories here, and we're going to create a few more today."

Apple senior vice president Phil Shiller took the stage to introduce a fourth generation iPad.

"It is a power house," Shiller said.

The fourth generation iPad features an A6X processor, 5 megapixel iSight camera, expanded LTE chipset, front-facing camera with FaceTime and 720p video capture, faster Wi-Fi, and Lightening connector. The new iPad is prices at $499 for a 16 GB model, $629 for a 16 GB model with 4G LTE.

Shiller also introduced an iPad mini. The smaller iPad is 7.2 millimeters thick, 0.63 pounds, comes in white and slate black. The iPad mini's screen is 7.9-inches at 1,024 x 768 resolution.

Apple launched the original iPad in April 2010. The iPad has since dominated the 9-inch tablet market, with a reported 70 percent market share. Cook reported 100 million iPad sold.

The iPad mini starts at $329 for a 16GB Wi-Fi only model, $429 for a 32 GB model and $529 for a 64 GB model.

apparently its as thin as a pencil , the ipad mini features the same tech as the old ipad 2 so it should run all those apps flawlessly, an updated macbook pro has also been announced without an optical drive and a new range of Imac's.

The fact that there were relatively few surprises and most was "leaked" just makes it quite non event for me. There is no wow factor.

I don't think that's too fair. The iPad mini looks pretty slick to me. Updating the iPad 4 was inevitable and obvious.

The impressive stuff from their announcements is all under the hood.

People have been saying they are underwhelmed by the latest Apple product announces, but what are they really expecting? They are a gadget, PC, cellphone and software company - maybe they should branch out into hoverboards?

P.S. That new iMac looks gorgeous too!
 
I don't know how anyone CAN'T be impressed by the new iMac - even if you hate Apple, it's undeniably a gorgeous piece of tech. The iPad Mini wasn't a surprise, but it's definitely going to appeal to a lot of people; though I don't think the price-point will feed into the Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 markets too much.

iPad 4 - or whatever Apple are calling it - was a bit unexpected; not sure if that's worth a look.

Overall, I think it was a cool event, but if its stock price is anything to go by (down over 3%) - investors weren't sold.
 
dissapointed that the new imac range chucked the internal optical drive, and the design isnt much different from the front if you compare it to the outgoing models.

Optical drives are so annoying though! The stupid things take up so much space. I rarely use mine, and the last time I tried (installing Dishonored) the bloody thing wouldn't read the disc so I downloaded it through Steam. If that was 4 years ago I would have been so mad.

Sure, from the front it's merely a gorgeous screen :P

Those US price points aren't half bad - once that thing hits SA though, people will pay out of their ass.

I wouldn't mind having one of those (I'd just install Windows on it so I can play some games xD )
 
Awesome announcements, just hating the fact that i bought an iPad 3 recently and then this happens.. and now i feel like i need to sell it for the "double the power" which doesn't justify an upgrade.. but still want it..
 
I feel for Apple users - They will never have the latest product for long. I'm not sure if that's a bad or good thing. I suppose they make more money that way.

Maybe I am being a bit harsh. I just get the feeling that Apple are taking the mickey out of consumers at the moment. They string out designs for as long as possible and slowly increment them just to make more money.

But I will say that the new iMac does look very nice. When I bought my 27" iMac about a year and half ago I was actually holding out for this one. Alas.
 
I remember Steve Jobs saying he hated the idea of an I pad mini. Pointless and market cannibalism were pretty much his views on the subject. Now he is gone and the mini comes out, kinda back tracking against the guy who made Apple?

Yeah it's very much the same with Samsung users as well, I guess most electronics users actually, look at the S3 it came out only about a year after the S2.
 
I personally am much more excited for the MS Surface though, the iPad is sort still riding a wave created by the first iPad.

True. Luckily the droid dev community is picking up the slack. I just recently updated my Galaxy S1 to 4.1 Jellybean with a custom ROM. Samsung has left the S1 hanging at 2.3 :/

Yeah I know a friend of mine has one he was pretty disappointed(I fear the day when they stop supporting the S2), also how is the custom Jellybean working for you? Might recommend it to my friend.

Ya, agree. I had my S2 for 6 months and the S3 came out. However, I am quite happy with my S2 and see no reason to upgrade to the S3. Unlike some Apple users that feel the need to upgrade every year.
