Kinect : Your thoughts and experience so far

There are plenty of kinect threads here, but very few detailing your thought and experience of the piece of tech. What has your experience been like over the last two months or so. Also, Are you still playing it, is it gathering dust, are you waiting for "hard core" games to be released?

The floor is yours.....

They have a few demo pods set up in the Somerset Mall. Whenever I can convince the wife to let me play for a bit to try it out I've formed a pretty ambivalent impression of it. The first irritating thing is the amount of time it usually takes to play a game - every screen requires you to choose an option then wait 10 seconds for it to confirm and load the next screen. The actual gameplay is fun I guess, except that it's a bunch of Wii-style minigames without a lot of depth, so it's difficult to judge the potential for more hardcore games.

I enjoy it. Though I've only got Kinect Adventures so far and I'm trying to get all the achievements. I'm still deciding what new Kinect game to get since the primary reason I bought it was to get some exercise without having to join the gym again. My next game will probably be that dance one though. Eh, not my kind of music but I reckon my wife will enjoy it.

We'll have to wait and see what games are coming. Kinect definitely has the potential and it's great fun playing games together. If it's worth it yet, well that will depend on whether you like any of the games that has been released so far.

It has a lot of potential but it needs better games. Kinect Adventure & Kinect Sports are the two best Kinect Games so far. I haven't tried the Dance Game or EA Sports Active 2.

I bought it just before new year.

I'm loving it to be honest. I must say the bundled game (Kinect Adventures) is great fun. The movement is smooth and the device picks you up very well.

I bought Motion Sports with it (what a disaster). Really upset by this. The game hardly picks you up properly. Really annoying.

Otherwise I still reckon the tech has great potential. Just need to wait for some better games.

I promised myself I wasn't going to buy one, then spontaneously did so anyway. That's what being a woman is all about.

Anyway, I guess my overwhelming impression thus far is that it's significantly better than I'd expected, but my expectations were admittedly rather dismal. I also picked up Your Shape: Fitness Evolved and Dance Central, both of which are pretty good. I bought Fitness Evolved to supplement my current exercise routine, which until now had comprised daily cycling and sit-ups and the occasional swim, and the cardio/toning stuff in the game (uh, "game") has significantly improved my overall workout. There's so much content stuffed in there, I know I'll be spinning that disc for months yet.

I bought Dance Central more for the novelty of it than anything else, since the music is really not at all to my tastes, but it's great fun with a crowd. I had a bunch of friends over for New Year's Eve, and Dance Central (and alcohol) pretty much keep everybody entertained the entire night.

It's a pretty cool bit of tech - I suppose I'm a slut for gadgets, which is probably why I relented and bought the thing - so I'm hoping to see some devs do something really interesting with it this year. In particular, I'd really like to see games featuring a combination of Kinect support and additional peripherals.

Well I took the plunge, bought kinect yesterday after much deliberation. Like Azi, I bought dance central as a fun "party" game and fitness evolved ( most of us need to lose a couple of kg's lets be honest). Being able to track your stats online and compare them to your friends and other around the world is pretty awesome.

As the system is now I dont see it being any good at say COD/Halo/Gears etc its just not that accurate. I am very excited about the upcoming games this year and to see what creative devs can come up with. I must also say that after a couple of hours play yesterday I picked up the controller to go back to the dashboard and holding the controller felt so good and natural, it was a strange experience, its then that I realized that this generation's kinect (yes there will be another, it only sold a gazzilion units) will NEVER replace the current controller, which is fine, its a add on not a replacement. Overall I am satisfied with it, even at a fairly high price point I still feel it was worth every cent.

PS - Nice article omega.

Just a warning - the new dashboard update removes all voice commands for those living outside of the US or UK even if you have an account from said region. It must somehow pick up your location. So sad, telling your xbox to open the tray and to play the disc just never got old. Here's to hoping they implement it soon for our region, maybe another 4 year wait? :(

EDIT - Nevermind, changed locale back to UK and its back to talking to your xbox, sounding like a fool :)

Kinect is pretty awesome, it's something new that neither sony or nintendo had thought of so microsoft just took the gap and decided to surprise us with what they made. Some of the games are really rubbish and the some others are really fun and enjoyable, a good idea from microsoft. :)

Kinect is cool

Don't own a Kinect but of what I have experienced it is extremely fun and some of the games are quite intense on the body. I think the best feature about it though is the simple fact that you don't have to hold any controller in your hand.

I've played with it in store and am amazed with it though I want Kinect Star Wars and Gears of War before taking the plunge. Hopefully this will be announced at E3.

Don't own a kinect (or an xbox for that matter), but played Dance Central at a friend's place recently & it awesome! I was so excited I was convinced I was gonna go out & buy an xbox+kinect the next day.. but when the next day came around, I thought about it & realized its gonna be like the Wii all over again, i.e. great to play with a bunch of friends, but will probably gather dust at home after a month or so...

kinect can be summed up in a word: over-rated (is it still one word if its hyphenated?)

yes, it is fun, but when controlling the crowds in a sport game is the highlight of that game, then its missing something!

Yeah Kinect Sports & Dance Central to me are the best games, tons of fun. Nothing wrong with the Kinect hardware, its just bad game developers and software issues for some of the games - like most console problems (There are always bad games being made).

PowerUp Heroes is the Kinect game I've been waiting for! I'm so buying it :D (weird trailer aside)

I got Kinect, i also feel it's totally over-rated. There's definitely alot of potential and i can see some interesting gameplay with it, but right now? Nothing. All we got is Fitness,Dancing and Kiddie crap . There really are absolutely ZERO serious games on kinect! It is cheaper to buy a Wii console than this sensor , and get the exact same games on there.

So it remains a gimmick.

That said that powerup heroes looks interesting...

My only problem with the thought of kinect is, can anyone here who has the old generation xbox, kinect giving them RROD's?
It would be very awesome to get, just the thought of that tends to make we want to stay away from purchasing the kinect which is the only problem i have right now.
Kinect looks more of like a fun toy than anything else, but for the hardcore gamers i cant see them using it that much.
hopefull they integrate something else with the kinect allowing people to use the kinect for more hardcore games, because it is very possible to do still.

Hell if they actually integrated Kinect with the normal dashboard i would be using it ALL the time! But nooooo, Microsoft made a "special" dashboard for Kinect only which have like 2 options "Launch Game" and "Back to the Normal Dashboard" (and some useless "Kinect News" thing) . How stupid is that? Maybe i'd like to browse my music collection using Kinect...but nooooo

I kinda expected to be sitting on my chair and just wave my hands around to scroll through the menus [and yes kinect can pick up your hands while sitting in a chair] . Missed opportunity...
