Local Messaging

Do any of you know if there are locally hosted equivalents to Skype, Googletalk and Windows Messenger?

Mxit is hosted locally. If you download the Mxit PC client from www.mxit.com you should be able to connect to it locally and access MSN and various other services through it.

Not sure on the PC client though. I've only ever connected to it locally via my cellphone.

Yeh PC u can do that too it works pretty well for that and they are using a new program called Pidgin less bugs on ur PC :)

Yep :)

They're hosting a competition though for people to develop a new Mxit PC client. I think they gave up after the tragedy that was their original attempt at developing one xD

Well, if you're interested, one (really good/reliable) local option is www.jabber.co.za via a client like Pidgin.

Setting it up is as simple as pie with Pidgin:

Add a new account
Protocol: XMPP
Username: Your choice
Domain: jabber.co.za
Resource: Leave blank
Password: Your choice
At the bottom tick Create this new account on the server and tadaaah.

A few additional tweaks under the advanced tab:

Under the advanced tab
Connect Port: 5222
Connect Server: jabber.co.za
File transfer proxies: proxy.jabber.co.za

Jabber.co.za will let you add Gmail users to your contact list, so you'll be able to talk to them even when you're stuck on local-only. I'm not sure whether the same would apply to MSN and similar accounts, but I doubt it.

I don't believe you can do the voice call thing through jabber.co.za though, so, eh... I'll leave the rest up to you, if it interests you :)

^^ That's the Mxit client we were speaking about ;)

It's all automatic though so you just download and go.
