Musica losing money on gaming: report

I have never seen Musica as a gaming shop and I prefer just buying a game online.

I get free delivery saving me the hassle of going to a mall.

I'll go with this. Musica for me has always ben more about music and movies, not gaming. The shops of there's that I have been in had tiny sections for gaming. Never a good selection or anything I wanted. Since then I have been more content to buy online through the likes of Steam, Takealot, Kalahari and others.

Have you ever priced games at musica !!!!

Now their prices are just insane not even worth visiting a store

It doesn't help that their games stay expensive long after everyone else has already dropped their prices. In this day and age with how fast games drop in price, that's called suicide and I genuinely don't find it surprising that they've been seeing a drop in sales.

It's also not of much help to Musica that what they want to charge me R300 for, Steam is going to have on a massive sale a few months down the line. I actually can't remember the last time I bought a physical game.

I have gone into a few Musicas looking for a game but was always disappointed in their collection or prices.

I know the one that is/was in Hatfield sometimes did not have ps3 games or when they had it the games that was R200 at CNA was still 400+ at musica.

I can understand why the execs at Musica thought it would be a good idea to add games to their stores. I mean look at what their competition is doing (Look & Listen and Top CD for example both do have quite extensive gaming sections. Even CNA is better than them). But they have really not implemented the idea well. The games are overpriced, the range is small and the section is not prominent in any way.

Online has also almost killed PC gaming sales in brick-and-mortar stores, but I do tend to buy physical copies of AAA titles, just because the download would be too big and my patience to small. And even then Takealot and Kalahari has prices well below that of the usual gaming stores.

With faster internet, gaming platforms implementing more extensive online stores (Steam, Xbox Live, PSN etc.) and online retailers gaining ground I can't really see any gaming store really having a future. What is happening with Musica is only the start I feel, unless the stores can come up with an innovative way of incorporating the online aspect with traditional brick-and-mortar stores. The first retailer that can partner with someone like Takealot or Kalahari is going to save their business in the long run...

Somehow I doubt that. The thing that makes stores such as Kalahari and TakeAlot so successful is that they don't function like brick or mortar stores because they (mostly) don't hold stock of their products. They're able to drop their prices because they get stock directly from the suppliers as it is needed. A brick and mortar store has to buy and keep stock of its products, so they can't drop prices as easily because it would mean losing money on the products they purchased.

If you mean they should partner up as in allow you to order from TakeAlot from inside the shop, wouldn't that be a bit pointless? In that case you might as well just order straight from home.

I fear that for gaming brick and mortar shops are a dying breed. The only people who really still buy there are people without credit cards (a vast minority), people without uncapped internet accounts (also a dying breed) and children. In today's videogaming climate, the brick and mortar shop is quick becoming an unsustainable business model.

I agree fully that stores do have a very limited life left and soon we'll be buying all our games directly from digital platforms. I was just thinking that stores should probably look into online solutions, otherwise their franchises may be harmed by a lack of income. Maybe not their own online portal, but something. If I were a store owner I would at least look into it to see if there are any possibility to keep people coming to my store.

Also your point is valid about the overall target market getting smaller. As online retailers implement even more ways of paying other than credit cards, and more people connect to the internet, less people will go out to a store to buy games. And I would like to lump movies, series and music in here as well, as all these are very easily to obtain online.

Would never go there if I was looking for a game. All purchases I would do at Musica is spur of the moment purchases and for that their prices are just way to high.

If I ever look for a game I would go to BT games, Zaps, Animax or such instead.

As for PC games, online is the way to go.

Actually it works quite well if you have online/Brock stores that was linked. When I stayed in NZ I use to browse EB-Games site during the day at work and marked my purchase as collection. Pick up the game on the way home and get to play it the same night.

Yeah, but nowadays Steam even has you covered on that. If you leave your Steam client running at home you can buy games on the Steam store and remotely install it on your PC back home so that it's ready to play once you get back home. No need to even run by the store.

For us this isn't feasible yet, seeing as the exchange rate makes things a bit expensive and our internet isn't necessarily that fast, but in first world countries the need for physical stores are fast declining.

I'm just glad no one is blaming piracy. Seriously though, their PC section is abysmal. Any PC gamer either shops online these days or orders online. I like the prices at BT and the support I get there. I've had a few issues with them telling me to come in to collect a pre-order even though its not there yet, but apart from that...
Musica is generally very unorganized. I miss look and listen. Musica's blurays are just stuck on the shelves. They have movies hiding behind movies. Look and listen never had that.
I go to musica to browse. If I find something, I'll get it from BT or Takealot.

BT is the only place aside from Steam that I used to get games. After multiple instances of beyond shit customer service from them my friends and I boycott them completely.

I've gone without a game rather than get it from them. Now it's just Steam and AWX.

I must say i'm one of the few BT supporters on the forum :) only because I traded in a couple of games a while back and still need to use my credit with them. I want to get a new controller as mine are going crazy. I'm just waiting for a special on a controller.

Well, that's a shocker

I went there in December last year to see what they have. They had FIFA 09 on XBox on sale...for R350. Are you kidding me? A game with 4 newer iterations on the market and you price it higher than Takealot now prices Far Cry 3?
