Brain-to-computer interface debuts
Tuesday, 10 November 2009, 11:55

For the first time ever, a brain-to-computer interface (BCI) is available on the market, and can be used by paralysed patients to control their environment.
Researchers around the world have been working on a BCI for the last 20 years, hoping to develop a direct communication channel between the brain and a computer.
A system like this could enable completely paralysed patients to communicate or to control devices in their environment just by mental activity.
More recently, some patients have been supervised by the researchers themselves to use such BCI systems in daily life.
Now, Austrian company g.tec medical engineering has introduced the first patient-ready BCI on the market.
The EEG-based spelling system is called intendiX and enables the user to select keys from a matrix just by paying attention to a target symbol on the screen. In this way the patient can write messages or commands.
intendiX can then speak the written text, print it or copy it into an e-mail message.
The system is designed to be used without the assistance of a technician and can be installed and operated by the caregiver. For most users, it requires only a few minutes of training.

Heheh
No, as I tried to show with the title of this thread, is [a brain to computer interface] is something I have been wishing for for years. It could be quite an experience to be able to control something both virtually and in reality using
one's mind.

So no, I am not so far gone as to need one of these for non-frivolous purposes, but thank you for your concern, Solitude.

What is your wildest geek-fantasy?

Wheres my addaptation to to play games? :D

My (unrealistic) geeky fantacy is to be able to upload my contiousness into a computer, live forever as a mashine. :p

More realistic one: build a robot controlled from my PC to terrorize my people with. I can build the robot itself if I had the metrials. But I don't have the knowledge for the interface to my PC. I'de mount things like BB guns on it. :p

My fantasy? To be fully immersed in a virtual world. all except deaths ofcourse.
I want to walk in the game with my own two feet. feel the water on my hands and the wind thru my hair. I want the splotched of blood oozing from the epic boss monster me and my guildies are owning to land on me and to feel its warmth...
I want reality :/

You want to feel the sun baking down on you as you traverse the Desert area in an RPG, be caught outside in the wind and rain or be hounded by
generic bad guys while hot lead flies at you from every direction?
To say nothing of possibly losing loved ones [a la Max Payne] or hangers-on
in the course of a game. If you feel anything at all for in-game character,
this feeling may be compounded in the form of reality you propose.

;):D

I want to be uploaded into a final fantasy 7 world and I want to be a part of the ebb and flow of the life stream. Eternal Bliss. Aaaahh. :)
