Next Xbox not backwards compatible with 360 discs: report

This is doesn't make sense, they had almost no backwards compatibility with the original xbox -> xbox 360. yet it gained customers.

Yea, but Xbox 1 wasn't that popular. Everyone was on the PS2 back then. So it wasn't MS that gained customers, it was Sony that lost them. Microsoft launched the Xbox 360 long before Sony and it was alot cheaper, that alone captured alot of impatient gamers. It was all timing and pricing if you ask me, not anything specific about the Xbox 360 itself.

So this time around, if Sony get the PS4 out before the Xbox 720 AND it's within the same price range, then i think Microsoft might have a surprise waiting.

Can't figure out if you are agreeing with me now, you yourself says its Price and timing, you don't mention backwards compatibility.

These companies do a crap ton of research before releasing consoles, they know what they're doing and I highly doubt that any of the consoles are going to fail.
I say keep your 360 in an easy to reach place for when nostalgia grabs you. i still have my PS2 set up for this reason.

I'm agreeing that backwards compatibility has always been a non-factor. Price and Availability overruled all other factors, including specs.

Watch, next everyone will be talking about the CPU and GPU speeds and whatnot, but no one buys a console based on this. Accessories like a Blue-Ray drive is useful and the availability of games on these consoles play a role, but in the end the "average joe" is going to buy whatever is on the shelves and fit his budget to play the game he wants to play.

Until microsoft actualy says something, I'm going to asume the rumors are false. We don't know exactly where these rumors originated...

.... and then the leaks and rumours come out contradicting all previous rumours...

Yea, but even that rumour is saying you need to get an actual Xbox 360 to have the backwards compatibility. I mean , seriously, they make it sound like an "add-on" , but to me it sounds like an actual Xbox 360 without a disc drive. So essentially you will be better off keeping your original xbox 360 anyway.

Sure Nintendo won with the Wii, but the WiiU is not doing as well as they hoped it would be doing. I guess their market research didn't work out so well then?

No backwards compatibility? Does not surprise me at all, because MS wants you to repurchase the games on XBL to make some extra money out of the consumer.

*I never tire to mention this :p

Maybe, still early days but actually just saw an article where sales have jumped by 129% for the WiiU in UK and Japan at the end of March.

your comments doesnt make sense and this thread is probably going to turn into a flame war due to some of the narrowmindedness going on here,

Point 1 Launching a console first does not mean your a going to win the war, the wii was launched last and it sold almost the same amount of the xbox and ps3 consoles combined. the dreamcast launched 1st and it came in last for its generation so ur theory is null and void.

Point 2

The xbox 1 was only launched in certain regions unlike the ps2, thats why it was not as mass adopted as the ps2, and the original xbox didnt fail it came second in total sales for that generation which means that nintendo actually failed cause they had more gaming heritage and the Gamecube was launched in more areas than the xbox.

1. The Wii was the cheapest and it catered for an entirely different market. So much so that i would not even find it valid to compare it with the Xbox or PS3.

As for launching first, in terms of identical products, i still disagree. The PS4 and Xbox 720 will be catering for the exact same market, they will be having the exact same games (with a few exclusives here and there) and we know it's probably going to be a 3-5 year thing. So if you know all this and the PS4 launched with a year headstart; and the latest Call of Duty/Crysis/Whatever is coming out , it being "ported" back to the Xbox 360 (read:inferior version to the PS4) after a delay of months, seriously how long do you think "core" gamers are going to wait before they buy the PS4 ?

Also i'm not saying a console will "win" in the long run by launching first, in fact the PS3 and Xbox 360 is neck-and-neck at this point in time. I'm saying a year headstart is going to have you gain alot more customers than without it. The Xbox 360 was the "underdog" when it launched, if they launched directly against the PS3, it might have been a different story.

Anyway, you are missing the point and clearly just nitpicking. Launching first is a factor, period, it's not the ONLY factor, but it sure as hell is a factor. It's a factor in any industry, especially in the tech industry (if Samsung launched their latest gen cellphone a year ahead of Apple's latest gen, what do you think will happen? Actually it already happened) . Obviously 3 month difference in launch times is not a factor, but a YEAR is (as was the case with the Xbox 360)

2. I never said the Xbox 1 Failed, i just stated it was far less popular than the PS2 at the time. Besides if they only launched it in limited territories, then by definition my point is valid. Doesn't mean it's bad or inferior.

The reason I got an xbox wasnt because of the release date, I only decided to get one once were both out. It was pretty much price. The problem with the PS3 was it was i think at the time R1000 more, but the games looked pretty much exactly the same. In the end I guess it wasn't practical to make games look better on one of the consoles, so most game pretty much looked exactly the same.

What I'm most excited about the new generation isnt which one is going to be better, but i believe they will stop holding back PC games. It currently doesnt really make business sense to make an insanely good looking game, and then have the same game look crap on the xbox/ps3.

Not only from a graphics perspective, but also from a coding perspective. The hardware on the 8th gen consoles are a lot closer to PC hardware which eliminates a lot of porting issues.
