I have a lot of great memories from the late 90's and 00's, when I was still gaming a lot. Since I started to work, I have not had so much time to enjoy my gaming, only playing about 5-10 games per year. But one memory from this time really does stick with me.
It was my first year of work after finishing my studies and had moved to Cape Town, while my folks still lived in Gauteng. It was the first time I had lived so far from my family (having studied only about 150km from home). I took some time off somewhere near the end of the year and went up to visit the family. While I was there, I got my hands on Dead Space and my brother had just bought a new, awesome rig. So, naturally, I played the game A LOT while there.
My sister is 13 years younger than I am, and all of us siblings were always very close. I could tell that she really missed me and didn't like me being so far from home. So, while I was there for my first visit, she wasn't going to leave my side at all. Not even when I'm playing a computer game. So I decided to make a bit of a show of the game, having known that it can be quite a scary experience.
I took the PC into a room with very thick, heavy curtains that can keep out the light. Hooked up my old Hi-Fi, to use the surround sound the best the game would allow. With the 23-inch widescreen ready, and all light switched off so that we are in the pitch black, I pulled my sister up a chair so that she can have the same experience as I did. And she watched while I played the game. She was thoroughly enjoying it, and really did get frightened quite often (so did I, actually). Sometimes I would ask her what weapon I should use etc etc, and she loved giving the input. We ended up spending a lot of time together that week, something we really needed and appreciated. Although Dead Space was a very good game, for that I will always be so thankful for the wonderful memories with my sister.
