OpenWeb launches limited availability uncapped ADSL from R149 per month

I wouldn't advise anybody to use this unless you're barely going to use your internet. Shortly before I cancelled my Standard Uncapped, I was getting 6kb/s download speeds right in peak-time and after hours.

+1

Had the same experience as you. Avoid it like the plague. At the beginning, when I just signed up with openweb it was great but with every month after that it just got worse and worse.

I'm having a much better experience with Mweb thank you very much.

I got the 1mbps uncapped account a couple months ago at R229 and it's been fine for me. It's only p2p that's shaped and that's usually lifted around the early hours of the morning. Other downloads (http, steam etc.) go fine around 100kBps any time of day.

I was a bit worried when I saw I'd been allocated the BCS network but with almost 100gigs each month I can't complain. Although I'd advise having a backup capped account for international gaming as it gives you a better ping.

I guess everyone's experience differs, but thought I'd add my 2c.

I think the BCS is one of the better backbones for OpenWeb's uncapped. I was moved around a lot with my standard uncapped, and in the end ended up on the IS backbone. If I ever have to go back to anything using the IS backbone I would commit suicide, and that's a promise.

They had a special on Gold uncapped shortly after I decided to cancel, and I was lucky enough to get an account on the VB backbone with that. Never had an issue since.

I'm not exactly sure on which backbone I'm on (I think it is IS, but not sure), but my Openweb Uncapped (and unshaped) Lite package works great. My account is more stable than Afrihost capped account and I cannot really tell the difference between my Openweb uncapped and my WebAfrica prepaid SAIX account... it works 100% all hours of the day. I'm almost on 60Gb already for this month (Steam specials... not my fault) and everything is still running perfect.

Yeah, I think it depends on where you live as well. Contention ratios play a big role in the service you're going to get. What speed is your line? I've found that 384 speeds have been increasing considerably the last while, and I think it's got to do with the fact that many people are upgrading their lines, meaning we're contending with a lot less people for bandwidth.

I want some suggestions on 4Mbps uncapped accounts, but all the IS uncapped accounts have the F.U.P. on them. Axxess, Afrihost, Openweb, are all around R 496, and MWEB @ R 539pm. Now here is the difference (according to the websites), 4 Mbps are throttled @ top 50% usage (instead of top 20% usage for other speeds); while on the Openweb Lite Uncapped, the complete page still says 20%; but I am sceptical about it being for the 4Mbps too, as all others I have seen seem to be @ 50%.

I want to know how much data usage some of you guys are using on these type of accounts... Also, is this any good for gaming (I am thinking about Battlefield 3 local, Heroes of Newerth int / local, and some others international and local), in its unthrottled state?

Imho i'd rather stick to something that doesn't require me to reboot my router or to switch backbones. Quite happy with mweb at moment where none of those two are required to use your account.

I would go for mweb as well. Had very few issues with them and been using them since their service started. Use the 4mbps uncapped, do about 50 - 100 gig a month(most was 253 gig in july).

P2P is shaped but everything else is fast especially steam downloads.

OpenWeb Uncapped Lite... According to the website, the bottom 80% is unshaped. I've used bandwidth up to 150Gb (I think it was Steam Summer Camp sale) and I've never reached the top 20% before. My usage for the current month is sitting at 80Gb which may or may not increase (depending on Steam's weekend deal :)).

Basically, this. The amount of babysitting that goes into an OpenWeb account is astonishing. I've gotten to the point where I am forced to keep an eye on Steam downloads and the moment the speed goes below 25kb/s, I have to reboot the router to get it back up.
