Paul Walker has died in a car accident in Santa Clarita, California. The actor was 40.

A statement from his official Facebook page says Walker was attending a charity event when the accident happened. Both he and his friend who was driving lost their lives.

"It is with a truly heavy heart that we must confirm that Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident while attending a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide," the post reads. "He was a passenger in a friend's car, in which both lost their lives. We appreciate your patience as we too are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news. Thank you for keeping his family and friends in your prayers during this very difficult time. We will do our best to keep you apprised on where to send condolences."

His official Twitter account also confirmed the news.

Since his rise to popularity in the late '90s, Walker appeared in a number of high profile Hollywood films, including Pleasantville, Varsity Blues and Flags of Our Fathers. But it is his role as Brian O'Connor in the Fast & the Furious for which he will be best remembered, having starred in a total of six films in Universal's high octane action franchise since 2001. Walker's death will inevitably leave a massive hole in any subsequent installments.

Universal has released this statement: "All of us at Universal are heartbroken. Paul was truly one of the most beloved and respected members of our studio family for 14 years, and this loss is devastating to us, to everyone involved with the FAST AND FURIOUS films, and to countless fans. We send our deepest and most sincere condolences to Paul's family."

Walker has a number of upcoming films on the release slate, including the suspense drama Hours, set to open later this month. Unfortunately, we will never see his anticipated interpretation of Agent 47 in the Hitman reboot, announced earlier this year.

Walker leaves behind a daughter, Meadow. He will be missed.

The grimmest news I have heard in ages. Thoroughly enjoyed watching him wield his magic on the big screen. So many people are going to miss him. RIP. Condolences to your family and friends.

Ironic, that he died in a car, when he mostly featured in films that had him driving cars dangerously fast.

The Fast and Furious has met its finale. There's no F&F without Brian O'Conner (except Tokyo Drift).

This is truly a sad day in show bis he was a great actor and i can't see F&F going further than 7 after this tragedy
I wonder how they will cut him from the movie and if they'll even finish it.

And he was up for the role of Agent 47 too :(

It is sad, but it also pisses me off, they both know the risks of showing off in cars. Just looking at the damage and left over wreckage, it is sad to say that they obviously where speeding, maybe doing some silly stunts and caused the accident. It is why even tho I love racing, I am a stickler for it to be on approved race tracks and with all the correct precautions taken.

I am sorry for his family and friends, he was a respected actor and he did a lot of good as well with all his charities.

Wow this sucks, I'm gonna miss him in the Fast and furious movies. All the best to the fam

This was really sad news over the weekend... That car wreck looks absolutely horrifying :(. Really really sad... The fact that 2 people had to die like that..and another sad part about this is his friend who's not noticed in all of this just because he wasn't famous..

Life's a tragedy.

very tragic indeed. I liked him most in Pawnshop Chronicles.

but I'm intrigued to see how they plan to write him out of Fuck Physics 7 now
