Physical vs Digital Games

Flex

Will lift for boobs!
I spoke to someone about this the other day, and I was baffled!

Member when a Hard Copy PC game with a tin case cost +-R350 and console games +-R500, and we already could not believe how expensive that was. At the end of the day we still had something physical and timeless to show for it.

Why are games R1000.00, and then all you get is a code sent to you via an email. Nothing physical at all.
I am not sure about you guys, but I miss having the physical game. The last physical game I bought was Diablo III, and my favorites are still WoW Vanilla and Guild Wars Factions.
Who of you still buy physical copies of games, whether it is console or PC. And what is your favorite hard Copy that you own?

100% Digital nowadays. Its so convenient. No searching for games, no changing discs.
Loaning out discs to people and then having them lose it. Gone.

I once loaned out a hard copy of Metal Gear 2. Then 10 years later after considering them lost, a newly made friend loaned me the game and what do you know they happened to be my discs.

Internet speeds in SA just need to get a little faster. Or rather my internet speeds.
Right now downloading is a 2 or 3 evenings of leaving the pc to download over night, but it would be nice to be able to delete the bigger games, and not have to worry about re-downloading them in a few months if I want to replay them.

as much as i love physical copies and the boxart i prefer digital these days less hassle looking for discs and swapping discs etc. you also stand a much better change of getting major discounts on digital copies compared to physical.

Still buy physical copies. I play on console. I do hate swapping discs every time between games. I'd go full digital if I had uncapped internet at home.

As much as I love physical, digital just makes so much sense these days. The saving space, the money saved, not having to kill friends for scratching borrowed disks.

...and my favorites are still... Guild Wars Factions.

Bunny Hoppers, Dagger and Spirit Spammers, UNITE!

On a serious note, globally games have increased in price. We are just seeing it worse here due to the $/€ exchange rates. I skip out on most new releases and wait for it to become cheaper.

I'm all for both since it's nice to have a backup sometimes... Oh wait most retail steam games are just the installer and a massive download.

It depends... If its a box I want to display on my shelf, I go physical. If its cheaper to get it physical, I go physical. Everything else, digital...

As much as I prefer physical copies, they tend to go on sale less. I am mostly digital these days now. However I always have to play tetris with the installed files, moving them to and from my SSD, both on my XBOX and my PC.

I have to admit that I cannot walk past a game shop without having a peek inside. Its a habit I picked up when I was still a teenager. Sometimes you will find a gem in the second hand section or specials and I will then still pick up a physical copy.

I like to buy certain games as physical if I think I'll be keeping them or reselling them. Often I can buy a game at full price and sell it for around half that, in essence funding your next purchase for half the price. But then I always look at digital when there are specials and what not on.

I only buy digital games for the pc.

XBox One wise I prefer it on a disc because I trade it or sell it after I play it. However if it's really cheap digital then I'll get the digital version.

Digital all the way, not only does it save you space IRL but it allows you to have a copy of the game that you cant loose, cant get stolen, cant get scratched and is always up to date. Also the last time I had a physical copy it took longer to install from DVD than from a Digital Download.

Did an article for MyBroadband and MyGaming that recently got published that reminded me of this thread...

"Buying software online through platforms like app stores is convenient, but there may be long-term consequences to keeping your installers for games and other software in the cloud."

In short: what happens if your gaming marketplace of choice goes offline, or starts decommissioning downloads on some games to free up server space?

The problem with buying games on Steam and other app stores

Or just removing music tracks from your game because of licensing issues. Like Rockstar did when they patch GTA: San Andreas.
