RTS and set number of units

The recent RTS thread got me thinking, am I the only one who hates those missions with no base building where they give you a set number of units to clear the stage?

I've stopped playing most single player missions now days because of it, and just go straight to skirmish. Pity because I used to enjoy following a campaign.

Usually I would agree with you, but in StarCraft 2 the missions where you have a couple of units were the most fun, because all of them were fairly unique and made you think a little bit.

Interesting- I haven't played Starcraft 2 yet...

Im not the biggest fan of base building etc. thats why I love games like Company of Heroes and the best rts of all time in my opinion -
SOLDIERS - HEROES OF WW2

I also prefer the skirmish style missions where you start off with a constructor unit and build up from scratch. Having said that, a side mission here or there to explore the story is alright - provided it's short and to the point.

I enjoy it, feels like those old school isometric tactical games where you lead a small group to perform the impossible.
Commandos 3 anyone?

Nothing better than building this massive base and walk in with 10000 strong army over the other base....

I love these types of games, but with limits ofcourse I like being handed a group of badasses troops like the Dawn of war series played the campaign 7-8times trough(just wish I could skip some of the cutscenes).

Also playing trough the Campaign for Sc2 again and must say its supper fun some missions are a bit hard for someone that can't makro so well.

Well I liked.... sorry LOVED COH
But games like Commandos I also loved... So a bit of both I guess :p

I actually like both. But I don't like only one of 2.

I like both because it makes game more interesting. It implements careful planning in missions with limited units, making it more tactical. While other type of mission keeps freedom(sort of) of actions on theatre than limited to given set of units.

However I like type of "reinforcements" game, where one call in units from off-screen base. Such examples are End War, Blitzkrieg 2.

Also, I like RPG'ish strategy (Silent Storm). It keeps tiny details management like ammo, type of ammo, supplies and speciality.

Though, I would appreciate if they made battlefield missions with many soldiers to manage.

It depends on play style of person... Enmasse or precise operation.

Oh yes, I loved the commando's games- minus 3 that it. If a game is built with that in mind then I have no problem with it because there are mechanisms in place to control the units properly.
