A stack of news just broke that I thought would be fun to discuss with you guys. Going to post each story in a new thread, starting with this one...

Spotify launching in South Africa – Source

Spotify plans to launch in South Africa during 2017, industry sources have told MyBroadband.

The service previously investigated launching in South Africa in 2014, but decided not to proceed.

A recent posting of a Senior Editor/Music Programmer job advert for South Africa by the company has also added to speculation it will be available soon.

While Spotify leads the subscription streaming music industry, with over 60 million subscribers and 140 million active users, it was beaten to market locally by several providers.

As much as I'd love to subscribe to one of these services, I can't justify the cost at the moment...

Any idea what their compression on songs is like? Just curious about data costs...

I'd have to look up the details for each specific service, but it's usually very good. Much smaller than downloading an MP3 of similar quality. Of course unless you use the offline features, you'll effectively be downloading the song every time you stream it.

That's cool, thanks. No need to go looking up details. I'll probably give their 30-day trial a whirl. I also see Google Music on the play store has 60 days atm... couldn't hurt to try. I just want something that has an app for PS4 (or works in its web browser failing that)

That's where Spotify shines, apparently... It's the one that has proper PS4 integration.

Sweet! I'll certainly give the trial a shot when its available (or if you can use it without a VPN, right now). Not sure I could cope with the free service limitations though.

Urgh, so I'm really glad that it will finally be coming to SA, but dammit this is pissing me off now.

So I got Google Music because I like Google products, I liked the app, and it was already installed on my phone. I liked the 3 month trail on Google Music, so I signed up permanently.

Then, my parents wanted music. They also wanted all the music that I had access to. So I got Apple Music and subscribed to the Family package to share with them. I did this because Google Music didn't have Family sharing at the time.

A week later, like literally a week later, Google Music brought Family sharing to SA. Now they're already on Apple Music, and it was already a mission to teach them how it worked. They like the app and already added a bunch of music to lists, so not gonna bug them to move now.

Now, Spotify is coming to SA, and Spotify has an Xbox app that would make it the best service for music, but dammit, now I've already got streaming services. I would love to have Spotify, but no, I am not gonna join ANOTHER damn service.

I went to sign up for the 60 day Google Music trial, but they won't give it to me without a credit card... Since I forget to turn of auto-renew crap at times, I'm not gonna bother...

Will wait to see what spotify allows.

Also moved over to Apple Music due to the family package a couple of months ago. Already have 4 family members on my account, so it's really good value for me. I also realized some music gets launched on Apple Music before Google, so there's that...

Oh, and Apple Music just works better on an Apple device, especially streaming via Bluetooth in the car. Both my wife and I have trouble with Google Play Music skipping and buffering over Bluetooth in the car, while Apple Music is smooth and hitch-free.

Well even using it on a non Apple device is a breeze. Say what you want about Apple and their products, they are all superbly developed and designed. Like Apple music, now my parents are far from technologically inclined, and both found it very easy and almost intuitive to use. It says a lot about a software's design if anyone, regardless of your knowledge of tech, can pick it up and just start using it.
