System Shock reboot launches Kickstarter campaign with free demo

I backed the Cyborg Enforcer edition ($150 tier) early this morning. System Shock 2 is one of my all time favourite games and now thanks to this I can finally play a modernised version of the original game that gave rise to it. :D

They had me at Chris Avellone. Will maybe back them later.

Was referencing their Kickstarter campaign video. So retro, so lame, so cool.

ikr? I'll link it below for others:

Terri Brosius reprises her role as SHODAN, and new VO will be recorded.

I'm in. I'll be backing as soon as I scrape the cash together!

I felt the same way, well actually Terri Brosius reprising her role feels like the icing on the cake. I have massive respect for Stephen Kick since his entire business started from him securing the rights to redistribute System Shock 2, thus getting it back in to my hands, to eventually securing the full rights to System Shock. Which has led to this project and something I never thought would happen: System Shock 3! < Just click the play button at the bottom of that tease.

Lastly, and I noticed some people are divided on this, but one of the biggest changes they are making is opting for an orchestral score rather than remastering the original DnB style tunes used in the original. In a way I can understand how this will help to enhance the atmosphere of the game but after hearing how cool one of the remastered DnB tunes sound, I'm a little disappointed it's been cast off as a stretch goal and won't be used in the game.

I agree 100% with you. The fact that they got Brosius on board was just an immediate indication that they're doing things right on this project, and that I can safely back it. Watching all the video's and reading up on the work just corroborates.

I'm also a little bummed about the music, but I'll wait and see what we end up with before making any judgement.

Yep, they had to get Brosius; just like how Ellen McLain became the voice of GLaDOS, Brosius is the voice of SHODAN! When I first heard her voice again in that SS3 tease I literally got goose bumps from it! Though I'm glad it's not only Brosius whom they recruited for this project, but also the original concept artist on System Shock 1, Robb Waters. I think it's great that they can ask the original artist to reinterpret his work and transform what was effectively a lump of pixels in the first game into something uniquely detailed and terrifying for the reboot. I mean just look at this:

Having him will go a long way towards helping them achieve their goal of making it, "System Shock as you remember it."

Then as Wlad mentioned they are getting people who have produced amazing games to work on this project but also people who are truly passionate about System Shock. While I already had faith in the team, it means something to know there are people behind this project who have a respect and passion for the series because they won't just treat it like another job.

As for safely backing I was pretty confident in this project from the get go or maybe I just really want it to succeed. :p Thankfully I haven't been burned yet by a Kickstarter project and I doubt I will be here, that said I have seen a lot of negative comments because of what happened with Mighty No. 9. The difference I feel is that Mighty No. 9 launched with nothing more than an idea, whereas here they've launched with an already playable demo. I've noticed, at least with the projects I've backed, that the ones which showed they already had a working prototype of some kind went on to actually launch their game. I don't think I'll ever back a project based off an idea alone; I want to see something tangible and I want to know the only reason he/she is on Kickstarter is to secure the funds needed to finish their project.
