Takealot's Unboxed Deals could mean cheaper games

So, a game can be seen as "defective" if the serial key isn't working, or the manual is "Black Ops II" when you most assuredly purchased Black Ops III for your PC/Console?

Im busy querying them regarding the MW3. I'll likely buy it (and a copy at R120) for LAN purposes, and let you guys know my experience regarding steam key activation etc. :)

Hi there. I would like to know what kind of guarantee exists for the selling of Unboxed PC games that use a key for activation. I would currently like to purchase Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. What steps is Takealot willing to take to ensure that I receive a serial key that was not already used by whoever unboxed it?

That's actually a very good question. Unfortunately I do not have the definite answer available. Please allow me to escalate this query through to our product team to clarify our stance on the serial key. I will let you know as soon as I receive any feedback on the matter.

I've just received an update on your query. I've been informed that unfortunately the unboxed deals are sold as is. Which means that we would be unable to replace a game code if it was used by the previous shopper. This is due to the fact that unboxed deals are not covered by the manufacturer warranty, they are however covered by the 6 month takealot warranty. Unfortunately we cannot replace the code if it's been used, so the item might be at a reduced price but it does not guarantee that the code will be valid. I hope this answers your question. Hopefully the brand new version of the game will go on sale soon so that you can still get the full game at a reduced price.

So you could potentially be buying a game that you can't even play, and they don't consider that to fall under their warranty?

Indeed. Especially seeing as games are sold more and more digitally-only, basically these days when you buy a game you're ONLY buying the key.

I did respond with this: Thanks for the reply. With this logic, whats to stop me from buying a game, using the key and then returning it as is for credit, for it to be used as an "unboxed" deal?
 
Yeah I don't see how they can list returned PC games on the Unboxed deals. Since there is no way of knowing if the cdkey has been used.
 
I feel the risk factor is too high purchasing already unboxed games. If you have a console and do not intend online play or for DLC, and the game is a good price, it may be worth it. However, possibly faulty or defective products just doesn't sit well with me.

Personally, I'd rather buy new, unless I'm in the store and they can test the product.

Clearly there are no gamers on their decision making team. I think you'd have to be really desperate to play a title if you buy it as an "unboxed" game under those terms, no matter how cheap it is.

Final response from Takealot (I'm not replying to this one :)): Good day Martin,

That could be a possibility. However when you log a return, the agent receiving your request would usually review your takealot profile to make sure that no suspicious activity is taking place(buying the same title twice, etc.). Also it's very rare when Cd's and DVD's are accepted back so the circumstances would need to be genuine. I hope this answers your question.

You are corrrect. I found this: Where you have changed your mind and would like a credit for a product, you can return it – provided the product is not:

a digital product such as an eBook, electronic voucher, gaming code or other digital download;
an audio or video recording or computer software that has been unsealed;

This makes me wonder a) why they have pc games in the unboxed sections and b)under what circumstances they were returned
